Darren, Carmen and Olly from dbstructural recently visited the H.G. Matthews brickworks in Chesham alongside our client, to explore materials for a new-build project.
Introduced to us by our sustainability-conscious client designing their new home, the visit gave us a real insight into the craftsmanship behind brickmaking. Since 1923, H.G. Matthews has been preserving the art of handmade, woodfired and bespoke bricks using the clay of the Chiltern Hills to create timeless materials full of character and quality.
What made this visit even more interesting was exploring STROCKS for our client's project. This innovative blockmaking method creates unfired blocks from clay, straw and water. A low-carbon option, the compressive strength of these blocks varies subject to the type of clay used but typically provides a minimum of 2.5N and up to 6.5N for London Clay.

While Middle East ceasefire extensions are likely to continue for another three weeks, we've been monitoring the impact on structural steel and concrete reinforcing bar costs.
According to BCIS, concrete reinforcing steel prices have fallen 7.2% annually, offering some relief. However, overall material costs remain elevated, with new housing up 3.4% in February and fabricated structural steel rising 2.7% on the month.
While ceasefire discussions bring some optimism, disruption to shipping and energy infrastructure means price fluctuation is likely to continue. We’re helping clients make significant savings through smarter structural design, reducing steel usage and reusing materials where possible. Early engagement during RIBA stages remains key to maximising efficiency.

We worked alongside Astrum Homes for six executive homes which used traditional load-bearing masonry construction. Great site footage from the team while this was one was in development.
