Dena is a recent alum of PMI (and @hiyouthsymphony !) who returned to our summer intensive in 2025 and volunteered to help out.
"I loved volunteering for PMI," Dena shared. "It was a really great experience to see how the program runs behind the scenes. It made me appreciate all the faculty and staff involved in putting on the program. I love being able to explore all avenues of music, and learning how to put on a summer intensive like this really helped me understand what it takes."
Dena currently studies music at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and credits HYS and PMI with awaking her passion for music.

Pacific Music Institute (PMI) is Hawaiʻi’s premier summer music program for young musicians. For over 35 years, PMI has provided exceptional music education to young musicians. Our current programs include world-class orchestral training, chamber music, jazz intensives, and ʻukulele workshops. Okay. It’s now the day before November! Woot woot! I’ve had such a good semester, I have the best roomies ever, I’ve done so much, seen so many people, made so many friends that I can’t even keep up! It’s been such a great semester, we’re just over half way through! Love you all dearly!!! 💋💋💋

Summer is coming to an end! From music adventures (like playing my first gig! @kelseaarmstrong , thanks and love you!) to flourishing friendships (you know who you are! ❤️) to learning experiences (thanks HSO and PMI for all you’ve prepared me for!), to seeing all the great theatre productions of the Bard at HSF (I will be doing that next summer, they were having too much fun).
I’ll say I’ve had a pretty productive summer, and I’m happy to be headed back to school to see all the lovely folks I’ve missed for four months!

First week home! As much as I miss being at school with all my friends, I missed the warm weather and my family! Oh - and it’s so nice to have not Barb or Bates food!

Sorry if the Eb key is acting weird… it’s louder than all the rest… But anyways… I’m happy to be home and to be pushing myself to do this! Sarah Lawrence Sem 2: well, here we are. I’ve made it through the first year of college, and the people that got me there are in part photographed in my camera roll and in part photographed in my heart. I love all of these people dearly, and strive to be as good as I can so they stay in my life. I will see most of you in 4 months, and for some, I’ll see you in the new year. Have the best of summers, and we will meet when we meet!
Well… Week 3: Demo no.3!This one’s called Stage Crush! Happy #newmusicmonday, but again a day late cause I had a jazz concert last night! Ummm… this one’s personal (as if the other two weren’t) and I’m sure many can relate to having a crush on someone who’s performing on a stage, so this goes out to all those actor-loving folks! Enjoy sinking into those feelings, and realizing that you can act on them (haha)!
Love you all dearly! I fear this might be the last demo in the practice room until next semester cause next week we’re headed home! I will do my best to continue these (and hopefully properly record them, produce them, and get them into the world over summer! SUMMER PROJECT: Album by August (hopefully!)
