Meet the performers of Black Country Rock!
As one of Portland’s Mt. Rushmore rockstar faces, Courtney Taylor-Taylor of @thedandywarhols and proprietor of The Odditorium and @theoldportland is the epitome of what this night is about. With one degree of separation from David Bowie and one million light years separation from reality, he’s the perfect artist to take us on a cosmic country RIDE!
We asked him: What is your relationship to Country Music?:
Courtney Taylor-Taylor: “I listen to songs about whiskey and cigarettes when I work out.”

Days of Bowie Presents Black Tie/White Noise: Station to Station with The Christopher Brown Quartet
Join us for the sixth installment of Black Tie/White Noise, where The Christopher Brown Quartet will perform David Bowie’s 1976 album, Station to Station, in its entirety.
Hard to pin down stylistically, Bowie’s 10th studio LP was described as everything from “Prog-Disco” to “Ice-Funk”. Merging his “Man Who Fell to Earth” film character into his new stage persona, The Thin White Duke, the record was fueled by heavy cocaine use that sometimes yielded 24 hour recording sessions. This made for an open and experimental songwriting and recording process, which is the perfect vibe for The Christopher Brown Quartet to explore.

Meet the performers of Black Country Rock!
When we came up with our “CowBowie” event, it was vital that we approach these songs with reverence without sounding like a corny parody and we knew there was one person BORN for this moment.
As one of the founders of the spaghetti western flavored @federale_pdx and also an integral member of @thebrianjonestown , @collinhegna has the musical vision and experience to pull this all together. Of course it helps that he’s surrounded by the talent of @the.far.sound , @pspurge@rhinestonedcowboy and @victour.f to create the perfect backing band.
We asked him: What is your relationship to Country Music?
Collin Hegna: “I grew up surrounded by music. Music of all different sorts. And one of the most well represented genres, to be sure, was country music. My parents are both from rural Oregon and when we went to visit my grandparents a lot of time was spent fishing, driving around in trucks and listening to country music. This was the 80s so there was a lot of Willie, Waylon, Dolly, George Strait and George Jones going on. I remember being mesmerized as a child particularly by the song “On The Road Again”. The magical world of a traveling group of friends who went from town to town playing music sounded like the coolest adventure outside of The Labrynth that I could imagine. I loved the focus on rugged individuality and the romantic notion of being FREE as described in so many of these songs. I wanted nothing more than to climb in a van with Waylon and Willie and get into fistfights and love affairs all over the USA. Paying for gas and a place to sleep with nothing more than a guitar and a voice as my tools. Which weirdly kind of describes how my life turned out (minus the fist fights and love affairs). So you might say that my life kind of turned out like a Willie Nelson song.. which ain’t so bad.”

Meet the performers of Black Country Rock!
Not only a longtime protagonist of Cosmic-country/Western Psych with the @silvertriplets , @lioneltiger tenure with the band @grails_band and as an unofficial member of @modestmouse makes him the perfect candidate at solving the riddle of keeping the integrity of a David Bowie song while making it feel “country.”
We asked him: What is your relationship to Country Music?
William Slater: “A big question! We have a complicated relationship and there’s much I could say about it, but as a kid growing up in the South I should admit I was pretty suspicious of country music for its pageantry & divisiveness in the places I knew. Do you remember, though, the time Kris Kristofferson was dispatched to remove Sinead from her stage at MSG (for the deafening post-SNL boos) and instead did the opposite? That is the version that interests me, & it cares less for the notions of establishment & ownership but more for the humanity that claws back at those things. I’ll add that Kristofferson has lived on my wall for many years because I admire a Rhodes scholar who wasn’t above mopping floors to be where he wanted to be. Or landing a helicopter on Cash’s lawn.”
Musically speaking my West Texan half has really reawakened to the old cowboy crooners of my youth- Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Mickey Newbury…
Bowie couldn’t be bothered with country but perhaps that was more an aversion to its fashion than the traditionalism, who knows. Your concert is a clever way to wade through the oil & water, as it were, and I appreciate you asking me.”

Meet the performers of Black Country Rock!
One of the founders for @daysofbowie , @elizabethmollo has been an event producer for over 20 years and a singer with bands like The Hyenas and currently, @thestupidgirlspdx .
We asked her: What is your relationship to Country Music?
Elizabeth: “To be honest, I have not had much of a connection with country music in my life. I definitely have always admired the legacy artists; Dolly, Willy, Johnny Cash. Producing and preparing to perform at this event has definitely opened my eyes and ears and has exposed me to this genre, and I am excited to listen and learn more. And most of all, I am so excited that an idea that has been percolating inside the heads of @djgregarious and I is finally happening. I can’t wait to see all of these talented musicians perform, I really think it will be a very special night.”

Meet the performers of Black Country Rock!
@jimi_pistola was raised on Roger Miller in the Great North Woods. After an outlaw education of Kristofferson and Waylon he was invited to join a regional touring country band at the age of 15. In the years since, the ‘Pistol’ has appeared on multiple recordings and shared stages with Rilo Kiley, Royal Trux, Richmond Fontaine and many more.
We asked him: What is your relationship to Country Music?
Jimi Pistola: Crazy Kenny-from-Nashville-who-played-with-Willie-Nelson taught me guitar and at age 14 I was asked to join a touring country band. My mom wouldn’t let me. Grew up with my dad playing and singing Roger Miller and Kristofferson on guitar (I have the guitar-I’ll show you.) My first ever concert was Chet Atkins. And then when “Urban Cowboy” came out we turned our ‘disco’ venue into a country venue. So Johnny Paycheck and “Luckenbach, Texas” were the soundtrack of my early tweens…that’s the condensed version.
