Happy International Dance Day! Today is the day! A work-in-progress will be shared this afternoon at the Salon Series at Whatlab. Immense gratitude to Co.Erasga for the opportunity, care, and support in making this work possible. This work is the final work in a triptych I’ve been developing over the last five years exploring identity, memory, and belonging. Inspired by the Chinese character 基 (ji), meaning foundation, the work asks how architectural forms hold the spiritual, cultural, and heart knowledge we carry within us. My collaborative team has truly been a dream to work with, bringing fluidity, generosity, and imagination to what at times felt like a daunting subject. Deep gratitude, love, and respect to all of them. East of the sun / Morgen Arr. by me Piano @perri.lo Film/audio recording @davidxpenny Strauss's Morgen has always had my favourite piano part of any art song. One day while playing it, I started singing along with the tune of East of the Sun. I was waiting for the voice and piano parts of these two songs to become incompatible, but they never really did. With a few small edits, they fit together seamlessly – and seem to honour the poetry of Morgen too. – Und morgen wird die Sonne wieder scheinen, Und auf dem Wege, den ich gehen werde, Wird uns, die Glücklichen, sie wieder einen Inmitten dieser sonne-athmenden Erde . . . Und zu dem Strand, dem weiten, wogenblauen, Werden wir still und langsam niedersteigen, Stumm werden wir uns in die Augen schauen, Und auf uns sinkt des Glückes stummes Schweigen . . .
