“DR RAHMAN” AT WEIRD MUSIC NIGHT, SATELLITE ART GALLERY, NEW YORK, NY

In 1999, Dr. Rahman found himself at a Kool Keith show in a small-ish venue in Albuquerque, a night that would remain seared into his memory. Performing in his Dr. Octagon persona, Kool Keith kept asking the crowd, “Y’all hungry?” again and again—his voice half-command, half-invocation. Dr. Rahman understood it not just as a question, but as a promise. Beats and rhymes came heavy, strange, and satisfying. Then, as if summoned from the absurd heart of the cosmos, crew members emerged with bags of KFC—fried chicken and biscuits—tossing them to the crowd. Bones flew back to the stage. Everyone, thought Dr. Rahman, got fed.
