Such a nice audience at Luton Music Club. Spent a few days transcribing some Horacio Salgan arrangements for gigs coming up over the next few months. Here’s his version of Gallo Ciego by Agustin Bardi. Stravinsky and Arthur Rubinstein were members of Salgan’s fan club so we’re in pretty respectable company!

Members of the London Tango Quintet have played for us individually in Luton on many occasions in the past. This however is their first visit in this very special line-up and let us hope this formidable quintet will become firm friends in the future. As the distinguished Newbury Festival reported – ‘Sheer tango dynamite!’ Join us for an evening of virtuoso musicianship and impeccable smouldering technique…

Violin makers and luthiers. Peg paste is not your friend. Most of us only go through two sticks in a whole career. And that’s only because we lost the first one. Thank you for your attention to this matter. #newviolin #violinmaking #tuning #londontangoquintet #luthier
La casita de mis viejos (The house of my parents) by #JuanCarlosCobián with words of #EnriqueCadícamo tells the story of a man returning, defeated by life, to his family home after a long absence. Prematurely aged and disappointed in love he is recognisable only by the sound of his voice. Nevertheless his widowed mother welcomes him back and he swears that he will never again leave her. The song ends there and we never get to find out what his mother thinks about all of this! Although we’re left hanging and we never get to find out how it all ends, it is a great tune and we do love playing it in this version inspired by the great #HoracioSalgan.

Ahead of our concert with @londontangoquintet on Saturday at 7.30 we focus on the group's leader and violinist, @davidjuritz . A pioneer in many fields, he is famous for having busked around the world for charity playing Bach's solo music on the violin, and travelled 60,000 miles through 60 cities in 24 countries on six continents Hugely respected in the world of classical music - he is often to be found leading session orchestras on film soundtracks, and used to lead the @londonmozartplayers - he also specialises in tango music, playing, arranging, writing and researching this unique style of music. To hear him with this amazing quintet (+ Carmen Subiela as guest vocalist) go to /oxhey-sounds - there are a handful of tickets left!
Such a wonderful birthday present from my daughter @jociejuritzcollection . Hammered on a stone in her garden. #prouddad #catbowl #metalwork #designer #birthdaypresent @jociejuritz #animator
Did Bach make a mistake? Practically every publisher and violinist corrects this chord (Gm6 on the third beat the third bar) to an Ebmaj7. There are lots of good reasons to do that; it’s treated that way in the recapitulation; it gets rid of a particularly awkward false relation with the Eb that follows it; and it sounds nicer!
But I think that that uncomfortable moment is exactly what Bach intended. The chord sounds difficult, not because it’s out of place, but only because the Eb that follows interrupts what would have been a modulation to D major. (You may have noticed I do a rather poor mock up of that towards the end of the vid.) if any note needs to be corrected it’s that Eb.
It wouldn’t be untypical of Bach to use extreme harmony to emphasise a point. Think of the Barrabas chord in the Matthew Passion or the choral Es ist genug.
For me, the key was that there are 41 flats in that movement. The numbers 14 and 41 appear often in Bachs music - and his life. The 14 buttons on his coat in his portrait, him waiting to join Mizler’s society so that he could be the 14th member, and the Goldberg Variations, published in 1741, not to mention the 41 pages of music in the six sonatas and partitas. That there are 41 Eb signs (there are more than E flats than Eb signs) could just be coincidence and there does appear to be one genuine ‘mistake’ on the 6th line where he adds an Eb sign to the key signature. However, even though I am the son of a statistician and have been warned about confirmation bias since childhood, I believe that Bach’s tonal scheme supports the view that the 41 Eb signs in the music are carefully planned. And that that awkward clash is significant.
A longer explanation will follow - probably on another platform. In the meantime, I’m playing an E natural there!
