The shot vs. the camera 🎥

Our initial instinct for this scene was to flag behind camera to clean up reflections so we could get a clear view of the car’s interior. Just before @joelaponis struck the light that was hitting the exterior of a house from a previous scene, I told him to hold off. We realized the reflection we were seeing was of the front of that house. Preston and I agreed the reflection would provide an ominous visual element which helped bring emotional and spatial context from the preceding scene. It always helps to be open to change on the day of the shoot.

Stairway to me is an exercise in staying. The nagging draw of a continues path pulls away from stopping and enjoying the beautiful place surrounding. Like the relentless march of time pulls one away from rest, the stairway is a reminder that the path like life continues forward.

Distance here, like looking further into the future, obscures and blends what’s beyond what’s in immediate proximity. The present, like one’s immediate surroundings are always much clearer than looking into the past or future. With other types of art, I always go into a project with an intended meaning. With photography however I often find meaning later on in the process. Hence the temporary title Layer Cake 🎂 Sometimes the point of photography for me is to observe in awe the beauty of the world around me. Nature has a way of giving meaning I didn’t even know I was looking for.

Finding naturally occurring minimalism is one of my favorite challenges in photography. Finding visual simplicity in the chaos of nature is deceptively difficult in contrast to the simple, serene feelings elicited by the setting. For many this is a simple or even boring composition but I celebrate this as a victory of minimalist composition.
