Just a few gems from the past month .. NYC you were everything I needed to prepare for my next chapter. Today I’m moving to Paris after almost 10 years. I’m so grateful for all of the connections I’ve made in my time here in Los Angeles. It’s not goodbye for ever just goodbye for now.

Can’t believe that yesterday I took my final bow with @ladanceproject . I’ve been with the company since 2016, and have been able to accomplish so many of my dreams that it’s time for me to go out into the world to make and accomplish so many more. I want to thank @benjaminmillepied , the staff, choreographers , donors and every single artist I got to share the stage with for loving me and supporting me in my time with the company. The memories and experiences I have will forever live on in my heart. This isn’t me retiring from dance, just the end of a chapter and the start of a new. (Here’s just a few memories of the many that I hold close to my heart) ✨

A Letter To WE ARE THE BEAT Supporters Hey, WE ARE THE BEAT Fam! @jonathanaubrielewis here, director + writer of WE ARE THE BEAT. 😊 I hope this update finds you well. Thank you so much for your contribution! I am beyond grateful and absolutely floored at your generosity. As many of you all probably already know, we DID NOT meet our $25K goal by Friday, May 31st. Being as though Kickstarter is all or nothing, your donation will be refunded by Kickstarter. I want you to know that even amid the above sobering reality, I intend to CONTINUE this journey toward actualizing WE ARE THE BEAT. So much of my work follows a journeyman on an emotional or intellectual quest toward higher consciousness. And as I journey toward WATB, it’s no different. Over the past two days, I’ve been wondering why I’m not angry, or completely distraught. I’ve literally looked in the mirror and tried to cry. I’ve tried to lean into the more somber emotions that one usually has, after missing a goal or experiencing a loss. But in reality, I think that I’m having a hard time, because I know that this film is building endurance in me – in us. Yes, even you all. Much like my protagonists, I/ we are on a journey as well and I / we have had to surrender to the process. This doesn’t mean that I haven’t had moments of sadness. I have. But overall, I have been okay, and that is because deep down, I know who I am. I know what I possess, and I know my purpose, while here on this planet. I also know the power and gift of WE ARE THE BEAT and what it will mean to Black men and boys and our mental health. MORE IN COMMENTS

We have officially re-launched our @kickstarter fundraising campaign for @wearethebeatfilm . WE ARE THE BEAT: An Odyssey Home, is an Afrofuturism dance film that follows a young Black aspiring planetary scientist named Daniel as he discovers his birthright, intrinsic value, and how to transcend earthly death by tapping into pulsating dance. He shape-shifts and transports to distant galaxies, illuminating the pathway for Black boys and men to understand and nurture their mental health. I made WE ARE THE BEAT(WATB) as a love letter to my uncle Daniel who was murdered, for Black men, like my father, whose electrifying buoyant spirit is still ablaze, even after navigating this world, and… my younger self. This project has encouraged me to face deeper levels of my own mental health in ways I could have never imagined. Never in a million years did I think that a film centered around dance would somehow be the catalyst for me reaching those “hard to reach,” levels of healing in my life. But it’s something about words like dance, rhythm, kinetic energy, anointing, Afro-Futurism, and several others in the WATB world that have literally and metaphorically given my spirit a regenerative recharge. Through the supreme illustrative artform that is, DANCE, our protagonist, Daniel addresses his Mental Health; first through the idiosyncratic movement of his body and then eventually through fully formed dance moves. In both instances, his BODY is the main source of communication and acts as a vessel to usher him into higher consciousness. His BODY overrides his limiting societal thoughts about himself, because in the cosmic, kinetic, dreamscape world of WATB, the BODY, The Black BODY is THE Alchemist. One of the fascinating themes in the film is when Daniel discovers his intrinsic value, and then an emotional vocabulary through dance. Continue in comments.
