WE ARE THE BEAT: An Odyssey Home, is an Afrofuturism dance film that follows a young Black aspiring planetary scientist named Daniel as he discovers his birthright, intrinsic value, and how to transcend earthly death by tapping into pulsating dance. He shape-shifts and transports to distant galaxies, illuminating the pathway for Black boys and men to understand and nurture their mental health.
I made WE ARE THE BEAT(WATB) as a love letter to my uncle Daniel who was murdered, for Black men, like my father, whose electrifying buoyant spirit is still ablaze, even after navigating this world, and… my younger self.
This project has encouraged me to face deeper levels of my own mental health in ways I could have never imagined. Never in a million years did I think that a film centered around dance would somehow be the catalyst for me reaching those “hard to reach,” levels of healing in my life. But it’s something about words like dance, rhythm, kinetic energy, anointing, Afro-Futurism, and several others in the WATB world that have literally and metaphorically given my spirit a regenerative recharge.
Through the supreme illustrative artform that is, DANCE, our protagonist, Daniel addresses his Mental Health; first through the idiosyncratic movement of his body and then eventually through fully formed dance moves. In both instances, his BODY is the main source of communication and acts as a vessel to usher him into higher consciousness. His BODY overrides his limiting societal thoughts about himself, because in the cosmic, kinetic, dreamscape world of WATB, the BODY, The Black BODY is THE Alchemist. One of the fascinating themes in the film is when Daniel discovers his intrinsic value, and then an emotional vocabulary through dance.
