I’ve been waiting a couple of years for this to hit the airwaves & I’m buzzing it’s finally out!! This is Florentenes Madeline - it was actually the first thing I recorded with them back when Liam the drummer was only 14 & the rest of them were 17!! But age ain’t nothing but a number & it certainly doesn’t mean anything without the talent & the tunes & this lot have got both in droves!!! Do yourself a favour, give this a listen - it’s only 2 & 1/2 mins - fall in love, then please share share share - the link is in my bio!! #florentenes #fae_grp #365artists #Madeline

Oslo The last gig! I can’t believe it’s gonna end! It was quite a surreal day - very early start, car to the airport, quick flight, 2 hour drive to the gig in Tonsberg, soundcheck with James & Wayne & the heroic techs MD & Rich standing in on drums & bass, then a day room at hotel opposite to get some kip before the gig. Tonsberg seemed lovely - I don’t know it’s story but there seems to be a lot of money there - there were certainly a lot of very expensive speed boats by the water! The gig was actually the smallest of the whole run, about 1500 I think, but it was lovely & intimate & there crowd were amazing, they were singing along so loud I would’ve thought they were many more! All through the gig I was kinda in my own head - every time we came to the last chorus of a song I’d be thinking “this is the last time I’ll play this part”, even down to the very end of Tolerate where I was literally counting down the chords “3 to go, 2 to go, wow, last one!”. It was a complicated set of emotions & such an amazing journey - I was so terrified as I walked onstage at Barrowlands all those months ago, I was so in my bubble I could barely look at the crowd & now it all seems so much fun onstage, it’s been amazing! But this is not my gig, this is the irreplaceable Nick Nasmyths gig & I am thrilled to say he’s doing great & will of course be back to do it properly! And I will be back in the studio doing what I can actually do properly! The universe back as it should be & I will be in the crowd singing along with everyone & loving it!  I’m so grateful to the band for basically making me take this journey - I’ve grown as a musician, it’s a great perspective as a producer to experience the excitement of a gig onstage & want to capture that lightning in a bottle & above all it’s been such a fun, exciting, bucket list ticking experience! Being onstage with a band headlining a festival - who woulda thunk it?! Wild! Thanks also to the fans who have made me feel so welcome! I didn’t get a chance to see much of Oslo, but I enjoyed a nice drink with James, Wayne, Martin Hall & Ciara late into the night, then 1 more posh hotel brekkie & it was all over! #manics #manicstreetpreachers

Stockholm What a city, beautiful architecture everywhere! After arriving at another outrageous hotel & weathering panic cos Wayne left his rucksack at the airport with his passport in it, James took us down to the Vasa museum which was jaw dropping! The story is the king of Sweden in 1626 wanted the biggest gunship in the world but they didn’t get the design right & it sunk the day it set sail in 1628 when the wind blew just a little! By an improbable stroke of luck the way it sunk in the silt preserved the wood & in 1961 it was raised & rebuilt & it is 98% all original! It’s so huge no pic could communicate its size - it makes the Mary Rose look like a dinghy! That night me, Wayne, Ciara, Kieran & George our pyro guy (who had heroically rescued Waynes bag!) went to a restaurant called Asian Post Office which was kinda Asian tapas - delicious small plates & cocktails - I had a chilli pineapple Marg that was frankly one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth!! I can’t say food there is cheap but it was truly beautiful & hell, you only live once! After the meal Ciara talked me & Wayne into getting those electric scooters you can hire back to the hotel & it was the most fun - as we raced off way too fast I think she began to regret her decision! We avoided injury tho & after one more cocktail to finish the night off managed to make it to bed safely! Day of gig the clouds gathered & monsoon began! We were playing outdoors, so it wasn’t a good sign! The gig was at an amusement park with rollercoasters, which sounds pretty Spinal Tap, but it turns out to be an absolutely classic rock n roll gig that everyone from Hendrix & The Who to Abba, Iggy & QOTSA have played as the gallery of photos backstage showed! Even half an hour before the gig I genuinely thought we’d be walking out to 100 people, the rain was so bad, but, amazingly, the place was packed - turns out the Swedes are made of sterner stuff! Another great gig - the band really pulling out the stops in appreciation for the folk braving the weather - James even did a quick Raindrops before Tsunami in his acoustic bit!  Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat! Oslo tomorrow! #manics #manicstreetpreachers

Helsinki Sorry this is late but I needed a week to process! To make up I’ll do 3 separate blogs over the next 3 days for each of the Scandinavian gigs! We flew to Helsinki the day before the gig & arrived at another insanely lovely hotel - boy do The Manics love a good hotel! I worry that this whole touring thing has ruined me in real life for normal hotels! A beautiful bowl of the freshest fruit was waiting in my room & after the long journey that didn’t last long! There was also a remote control for the toilet that took some working out but was pretty amazing once I got the idea - let just say I felt like Crocodile Dundee & if you don’t get that reference you’ll have to watch the movie I’m afraid! Wayne, Ciara (our amazing tour manager) & I ventured out in the evening in search of a great meal I ended up having one of the top 3 steaks I’ve ever had in my life with an amazing bottle of red! The day of the gig I had the obligatory posh hotel brekkie then walked thru beautiful Helsinki to check out the site where we were playing. There was an outdoor pool & sauna next to the gig (which was by the sea on the east side of the city), so I turned up early with my swimming shorts. The pool was just beautiful, I did 50 lengths & then jumped in the sauna which had a Finnish guy in it that I think saw me & decided to test how hot I would stand! He kept putting more water on the coals & it got insanely hot so after 10 mins I left & jumped in the extra sea water pool which was pretty bloody chilly! When I came out & sat by the pool tho the most beautiful sense of peace came over me & I really had a moment of being at one with the universe! I’ve got to say these Scandi folk really do seem to have life sussed! The gig that night was amazing - the crowd were brilliant & watching the sun go down over the water while playing these songs that have soundtracked my whole adult life felt profound! I guess I could see the end of this wild experience coming & every moment seemed big! We played Union City Blue again - James’s voice really does sound great on that! Early flight to Stockholm in the morning so straight to bed after the gig! More tomorrow!  #manics #manicstreetpreachers

Audley End Kind of nearly a hometown gig for me this one! After a nice glass of wine with my wife Vee, Sean & his lovely gf on Friday night & a naughty hotel brekkie in the morning, me, James & Wayne went to soundcheck - Sean & Nick weren’t there so amazing tech’s Ceri & Rich heroically stood in on bass & drums respectively & we were able to get a good approximation! I decided to stay at the site as I really wanted to see both @ash_1977 & @thecharlatans - I worked with Ash 20 years ago in New Jersey & it was so lovely to catch up with them in the afternoon - they really are the nicest bunch of guys! Ash played an ripping set - the sound, courtesy of another old friend, Haggis, was so brilliant - I genuinely think that Girl From Mars is every bit as good as Teenage Kicks as a perfect distillation of what it’s like to be 16 - utterly classic! The Charlatans were similarly brilliant - they started with Weirdo which was always one of my fave ever Hammond sounds & it was perfect - I seem cursed at the moment to go onstage after genius organ players - last week it was Kula Shaker this week the amazing @tonyrogers ! I went & chatted to him after & paid my respects - his performance defo made me feel like, well, a charlatan! We came on wondering if the audience might be quite sedate - there were a lot of picnic blankets & camping chairs earlier - but we couldn’t have been more wrong! From the moment we started they were singing it right back at us! I recognised loads of faces in the front row from the tour - it seems like it was The Manics crowd all along!! I absolutely loved the show - James voice was in fine, soaring form & Nick & Sean were all over it! The amazing @lana_mcdonagh came on to sing Hiding In Plain Sight and was brilliant! We debuted their cover of Union City Blue which I loved & James’s voice was perfect for! It was a great show & I tried to drink it in as I think this was the last huge one! In a week my producer hat will be back on with @florentenes in my spiritual home @rockfieldstudios , then 3 gigs in Scandi & this crazy trip is over & it will all feel like it happened to someone else! #manics #manicstreetpreachers #audleyend #ash #thecharlatans

Forest Fest, Co. Laois, Ireland I’ve been looking forward to this one - I just had a feeling it would be great & it was!! We flew out on Friday & the hotel was so great I had a bit of imposter syndrome! I went for a pretty long swim to attempt to mitigate the inevitable guiness & great food that was to come! Much is spoken of how much better the black stuff is in Dublin than in London & it’s all true - it’s like velvet & slips down way too easily! Both our wonderful tour managers Ciara & Naomi are from Dublin & they had arranged for us to go to an amazing restaurant called Coppinger, Sean came out too, which is rare, but he was in great form & we had a wonderful night with great food & company! The next morning James had found a brilliant guitar shop called Some Neck Guitars that had a guitar he wanted to check out, so me & Wayne joined him & what a place it was! Packed full of beautiful vintage amps & guitars - we chatted to the owner for over an hour as he was a fan of the records I’d made with Roger Daltrey & Wilko Johnson & The Who & he showed me his Fender Tremolux from 1959 which was one of the best amps I’ve ever heard! We escaped the shop with my wallet unhurt somehow! Dublin is such a vibe right now - it really feels like NY in the 90’s to me - young, vibrant, arty, great restaurants everywhere! I loved it! The festival was an hours drive & me & Wayne went down a little early to check out some of the bands. I hooked up with Cormac & Darragh from Kerbdog, who I produced as Wilt over 20 years ago & it was so lovely to see them! I caught half their set too & they were on fire! We went on at 10pm & the crowd were just brilliant - when you hear them roaring the chorus of Motorcycle back at you right from the start, you know it’s gonna be a good one & so it was! We played Ocean Spray for the first time too - I’ve always loved that tune, so that was a privilege! I think I messed up the string run at the end of the second verse of Design but reckon I got away with it!! I was back home within 48 hours of leaving so it was quick but beautiful!! Audrey End next week - very near where I live so I can’t wait! #manicstreetpreachers #manics #forestfest

Bospop Holland & Rock Zottegem Belgium My grandfather was a Dutch immigrant cucumber farmer to the east end of London, so Bospop was a foray into the motherland for me, as James pointed out on stage - he’s trying to get the name Dave “Dutch” Eringa to stick!! 😂 I’ve actually mixed a whole album since Bilbao, I’ve barely had a day off, so going away for this felt like an enforced rest rather than work! We were staying in a lovely hotel in Brussels, so after a 7 hour drive over we hit the town for a couple of beers then an amazing steak & frites with waffles to follow on Thursday evening. On Friday it was a 2 1/2 hour very flat drive into Holland, but it was great when we got there, a brilliantly organised festival with outrageously good catering - the Korean fried chicken was a thing of wonder! We were only playing for an hour & it was a great show, but a long drive back to Brussels. Call time Saturday wasn’t til 5 so I had a chance to explore Brussels & its incredible ancient architecture, then onto Zottegem! When we got there the dressing room was in a sports center next door to the festival which felt detached & even a little Spinal Tap - I was beginning to wonder if this was gonna be a difficult one! The stage was in a massive tent so I went out to watch @rivalsons & get a feel for the place - they sounded great so I relaxed a little. James, Nick & Sean arrived a little after us & James in particular was in a really bouncy mood, so that helped, then when we went out the crowd were absolutely brilliant & it ended up being one of my fave gigs we’ve done - it just felt really in the groove! We played Walk Me To The Bridge for the first time in a while - that’s so fun to play & as a punter I always think it sounds great live! I was standing there on stage as the crowd roared Tolerate thinking ‘remember this,’ there’s only 5 shows to go!! It’s been such a brilliant journey doing all this, reconnecting with playing & I’m loving it at this point, so it’s nice to try to be in the moment on stage and remember the great bits before I’m locked up back in the studio where I belong! Looking forward to Ireland in 2 weeks! #manics #manicstreetpreachers

Bilbao Wow - that was a trip! We left a blistering Heathrow & landed in an even more blistering Bilbao qt 37C! Me, Wayne & lovely tour manager Naomi went straight out for a cold beer & some tapas while James got the pool & gym & Nicky & Sean enjoyed the air con at the hotel! Bilbao is a beautiful Basque city, absolutely buzzing on a Friday night; kids were playing in the street while parents enjoyed a glass of wine & old folk sat & chatted - no one was inside watching Eastenders! Beautiful design is everywhere & none more obviously than the amazing Guggenheim museum, which blew me away on Saturday afternoon. Their collection of mostly post war art ran the gamut from amazing canvases by Rothko, Basquiat, De Kooning & many others, to cutting edge interactive digital art, installations & sculpture - it was so inspiring! The weather on Saturday was a lot cooler & it started looking a little like it was gonna rain, then in the early evening incredible forked lightning broke out over the mountains & the heavens opened!! Bizarrely we weren’t onstage until 12.20am so i thought it would ease up, but it just got more intense & by the time we went on it was pretty much monsoon! I didn’t expect anyone to be there, but many brave souls were waiting for us as we went on. Then the rain got worse & the wind started to blow it on the stage - I was convinced my keyboards would blow up any minute they were so wet!! Then there were technical gremlins - Sean had no click in his in-ears for You Stole The Sun so we had to abandon the first attempt while that was sorted - you would think this would be a disaster, but I saw the band consciously dig in & raise the energy level to 11!! The crowd were amazing - singing it all back at us & tolerating the rain, & the band’s electric energy, especially James’, took it to another level - by the end of the set the crowd was as far as the eye could see; it was a communion at 2am! They snatched victory from the jaws of defeat - this is why they’re rock stars! 3 weeks off now to mix an album then on to Belgium & Holland!! #manic #manicstreetpreachers

Finland - Turku Rockfest Finland is such a spectacular country - I’ve spent a bit of time here before & it’s great! Insanely clean, beautiful & the people are lovely! We massively lucked out on the weather too - it was gorgeous! Me & James were particularly excited for this one as The Cult were playing before us & we both love them! It’s 36 years to the day today that I met my wife Vee in a club in east London & they played The Cult there every week - Wildflower, Lil Devil, Love Removal Machine, Sanctuary - these were such important songs for us growing up & I felt quite emotional hearing them live - still sounding brilliant! There is a connection between the 2 bands too - the brilliant & sadly missed Steve Brown produced both Love & Generation Terrorists & I know the Manics picked him because of it! I got the opportunity to talk to Billy Duffy afterwards about Steve, working with Rick Rubin & Bob Rock & tales of Rockfield - he was so down to earth & brilliant & what a player! Later in the night I found myself back at the hotel bar chatting into the wee hours with Ian Astbury & he was amazing too - everything you’d hope he’d be & more! A lovely bonus in this mad summer! We also saw Michael Monroe from Hanoi Rocks at the festival - they were also a band early Manics loved - they used to cover Don’t You Ever Leave Me Baby really early on - he still looks like a total rock star too! The festival was fantastic - we went on at 8 & the crowd looked huge! The set felt really well balanced - obv plenty of classics for a festival but 3 new ones in there too! I love the way people react to People Ruin Paintings for a first time - people just seem to get it - it’s a feel thing! James voice was on soaring form & everyone seemed in a great mood! From my keyboard rig I was looking directly at the crane that people were doing bungee from & every time I looked up someone was plunging insanely towards the ground!! I’m definitely enjoying it at this point - the nerves are absolutely still there in swathes, but I’m getting the hang of this festival thing & I’m digging it!! Onwards to Bilbao in Spain next week - should be a hot one!!

Live At Leeds & Bearded Theory Wow - festival headlines! I never thought I’d be doing this in my 50’s…..well, they’re headlining & I’m along for the ride, obv! It so different to the tour - much more seat of the pants, just go out there & do it, but both nights my monitors were actually brilliant so it was great. Mixed the set up a bit from the tour - we only had 70 mins at Leeds, but had 90 at Bearded Theory so were able to get in Despair & Walk Me To The Bridge, which is always fun to play! I thought both gigs were great - it was amazing seeing all those people! In Leeds the great @jamiewebster played before us - I’ve produced his last 2 albums, so it was amazing to catch up with him & I was out in the crowd for his whole set! He whipped the crowd into a frenzy & it was so lovely to see so many people singing along every word like their lives depended on it, of these songs that I had a hand in making! Proper warm fuzzy feeling! I was reflecting this week on songs in general - they are the raw material of our industry - they already exist when they come to me & yes I can have a big impact on how they come across & I might change things a lot in some cases, but the actual creation of the song still feels like alchemy to me…plucking these bits of art that soundtrack peoples lives out of the air is true magic. It feels amazing to be up onstage playing these songs I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in, but I can’t imagine how great it feels to be the 3 of them hearing everyone singing back these words & tunes that they’ve conjured out of thin air! It’s a true communion! It still feels completely surreal to be doing this & when I’m at home in the studio doing what I’m actually good at it feels like all of this happened to a different person, but I’m very happy to be along for the ride! Back home now for more mixing, then back up north for pre production with the brilliant @florentenes , then off to Finland for the Turku festival in a couple of weeks - no rest for the wicked, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!!! I will report from there….. #manics #manicstreetpreachers #jamiewebster #beardedtheory #liveatleeds
