Puerto Rican Weekend in New York City has always been about more than one event.
It’s the feeling of the city coming alive. Families outside all day. Music echoing through the blocks. Flags hanging from windows and shoulders. Artists, elders, organizers, musicians, vendors, poets, and community all moving through the same streets together.
On Saturday, June 13th, while people are out enjoying the Puerto Rican Festival in El Barrio, we’ll be opening the doors at The People’s Church for the 2nd Annual Coquí Poetic Voices.
Throughout the day, we’ll be hosting a community pop-up featuring local vendors, artists, organizations, and community resource tables inside the church. People can stop in throughout the festival, support local community work, connect with artists and organizations, and help support The People’s Church and the space it continues to provide for the neighborhood.
Then after the festival, we transition into an evening of poetry, spoken word, music, storytelling, cultural performance, and live expression.
Coquí Poetic Voices was created to bring people together through culture, creativity, memory, and community. Whether you’re stepping to the mic, supporting a local vendor, performing, listening, reconnecting, or simply passing through after being outside all day, this space is for the people.
