Did you know that the Azumini River in Ndoki, Abia State, which is located about 19 nautical miles from the Atlantic Ocean, is the proposed site for Abia State’s seaport project?
Interestingly, the river is naturally blue but turns green whenever it rains. This unique natural phenomenon has attracted tourists to the area over the years, making it a popular resort destination.
Located in Azumini, Ndoki, in Ukwa East LGA of Abia State, the Azumini Blue River is also historically significant. During the colonial era, it served as an ancient slave trade route known locally as “Mini-Ogigo.”
Maazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), once disclosed on Radio Biafra that he used this same river, which has access to the Atlantic Ocean, as an escape route from the Nigerian Army after the 2017 military invasion of his home. According to him, despite facing gunfire during the operation, the river helped facilitate his escape.
Not many people also know that during the colonial era, a port existed in this same location, where palm produce and other goods were exported abroad.
Yet, some people still claim that the South East is landlocked, but right before their eyes, Governor Alex Otti is about to prove them wrong with the proposed Abia seaport project.
