Scenes from @jerseydevilhuntbikepacking
Last weekend I joined @jbphilly87 and @traceysikora for an overnight trip on the southern half of @bikepackingroots Jersey Devil Hunt Bikepacking route. It’s been on my to-do list for a long time. It didn’t disappoint and I can’t wait to go back.
I’m working on a recap for @thetrellisphilly with a gallery, more info, and hopefully some inspo for your next trip. This post is somewhere between self-accountability and procrastination.
If you have Qs about the route, plan to do it sometime soon, or are looking for homies to ride with with, lmk in the comments. Happy Hunting 😈
Meet the judges: @dapperdanlol
Introducing Dan Powers (he, him), founder of @thetrellisphilly , a website that seeks to document and elevate cycling culture in Philadelphia. He first combined photography and bikes while shooting photos of friends on BMX bikes about twenty years ago. While those photos are lost to time in discarded hard drives, his passion for bikes and creating art endures.
Visit thetrellisphilly.com (link in bio) for the official contest rules. While you’re there, submit up to three photos by January 7 for a chance to win:
$100 for best overall
$75 for second place overall
$50 for third place overall
$25 for beast in each category:
- best taken while riding a bike
- best highlighting athleticism
- best highlighting adventure
- best highlighting activism/urbanism
- best highlighting everyday biking
Thanks to @southphillyjays for partnering and contributing to the cash prize pool. More judges will be announced soon!

Kudos to the 70 or so riders that pulled up for some part of the third Winter Solstice Century and congrats to everyone who pedaled Philly’s perimeter for the first time ❄️
Thanks to @brooch.a_river for making the day even more meaningful by setting up a fundraiser for @phillybailout - folks were inspired enough by this thing that they were able to raise $913. We were literally riding for freedom 🧡
I’m so excited that so many people rode their bikes 100 miles for the first time on Sunday. It’s so satisfying to have an epic adventure right out your front door, but it’s also so satisfying to know that folks like @bassagaryou drove from Charlotte to make this happen 💯
“Why would anybody wanna do this” has been a tongue-in-cheek tag line for the event, but if you wanna share in the comments what made you wanna do this or any of the day’s highlights, I’d love to read about it.
If you didn’t get a spoke card, I’ll make a second run and drop them at @frankensteinbikeworx for pick up. Keep an eye out on the stories or hit me up to coordinate something.
Happy holidays!

❄️ The third edition.
Join me as I celebrate and bid farewell to 2025 by riding the perimeter of Philadelphia on the shortest day of the year. It’s a novel experience on a dumb route. The goal is to start at sunrise and finish by sunset.
WHERE: Start and end at Penn Treaty Park. WHEN: Sunrise on the winter solstice, 12/21/25, 7:18am. Sunset is 4:38pm. WHAT: 91 miles, 3,000 feet elevation, along Philadelphia’s border. Your commute may net you that century. WHO: This is an inherently challenging ride best suited for those with experience wayfinding, riding long distances, and those who feel comfortable on high-stress roads. That being said, all people and all bikes are welcome.
❄️ This is totally self-supported and self-paced. There’s nothing to win but new friends and nothing to lose but your sanity. Depending on who shows up and what their goals are, we may end up staying together or breaking up into groups. No one should ride alone. Countless food and bailouts on or near the route if you need to drop.
❄️ I updated the route since last year: - We’ll use the Platt Bridge instead of Passyunk Ave. We’ll use the sidewalk, carefully, rather than riding in the lane. I tested it and it’s actually pretty chill. - We’ll ditch the pavement at the northwest border for a gravel descent in the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. It’s gonna be awesome. - Some minor changes in Northeast Philly just to keep things interesting.
Note: There are a few unpaved segments (Northwestern Ave, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, Manayunk Canal Towpath, John Heinz NWR). Choose your bike accordingly or detour/adjust as you see fit.

Cranksgiving Philly 2025 🍅
punctuated by overwhelming gratitude for the sweeping support by our partners, sponsors, and everyone who participated in @cranksgiving_philly .
Still crunching the numbers but you all eclipsed last year’s success in donating tonnage and cash to @philabundance and @homies.helping.homies . More on that to come…
I couldn’t ask for a better planning partner than @russell_abernethy_ . It’s nothing but fun being in total sync while working out the all the big and little details and bringing the event to life.
I can’t shout out enough others but you know who you are. My face hurts from smiling all day and this is all your fault 🧡
sharing a preview for a photo essay covering @phillycx
shooting in the dark is hard. but the action and the setting in this case make for a fun process and product
starting with an outtake that captures the daze of a cross race in an untamed space
followed by a neat little dismount series of duncan, who’s fighting equally hard against the competition and the elements
i’ve had a lot of fun shooting a portrait series for @cranksgiving_philly the last few weeks. but my fav recent portrait might be this last one of @duncan__________donuts that neither of us planned for or expected
keep your eyes peeled for more. and thanks to everyone that organized, supported, and raced in bandit and made such a sick event happen
New story brewing at @thetrellisphilly@stephneeee and I had a little escape last weekend. we’ll be sharing the route and a recap and hope it inspires your next adventure 🎇
Bon voyage, et bonne chance, @sidwass 🥂
My homie Simona is departing this weekend on a back-to-back cross country bike trip leading riders with @adventurecycling . She’ll be riding a bike that she built herself at @bilenkycycleworks through the @phillybikeexpo x @sramroad framebuilders scholarship.
New story dropping soon on @thetrellisphilly with all the deets and photos. Be sure to check it out 🧡
