Filming surfers on Saturday, I ran into a surfing dog. I haven’t been doing surf photography for very long, so at the time I had no idea who Sugar the surfing dog was. While I was filming, though, it felt special. Not just because it was a surfing dog, but because of the love I was witnessing between the dog and his surfer.
The whole community came out and cheered them on from the pier. It felt like everyone there understood the moment, even if I didn’t yet.
It wasn’t until I got home and looked up Sugar that I realized how truly special this dog, this surfer, and this community are. I went from being amazed by a surfing dog and the love between them to feeling somewhat honored that I happened to be in the right place at the right time to help document such a special occasion Sugar’s last surf.
