It feels like a part of me has awoken from a deep slumber. I didn’t realize how much I missed surfing real waves. Part of my heart felt like it was fading, but this trip has revived me, making me feel more alive than ever! Flying straight into the biggest south swell of the year after only surfing three times last year was a little unsettling, but I knew I’d be fine and rise to the occasion. “Usually, the threat of death makes people a lot more aware of their lives.” —Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist) The night before the biggest day of the swell, I was crippled with fear and couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t scared of dying, but I was terrified I wouldn’t get to meet my new nephew or experience the rest of my life. I prayed that night to live fearlessly. I imagined Billy the Kid from the classic western “Young Guns” and how he laughed in the face of danger. Even when outnumbered or facing death in a gun fight, he was always laughing and having the time of his life. That’s what I prayed for. The morning of the swell, I was still nervous because I knew how big it was—10 to 12 feet Hawaiian, meaning the faces were up to 20-25 feet. Fear makes your heart race, burns more oxygen, and shortens your breath hold, making the situation worse. But once I got out there, it felt like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. When I pulled into the first big barrel of the day, it gave me the biggest rush of adrenaline, and I felt invincible. These were some of the heaviest waves I’ve ever surfed. With no recent training, I was definitely in over my head (literally), but being fearless made everything easier. I took some of the heaviest beatings and hold-downs of my life. One wipeout almost knocked the wind out of me completely, but after the worst wipeouts, I came up smiling and laughing. I was having the time of my life! I am so blessed to live the life I do and having so many amazing people surrounding me has made such a big difference when faced with unfortunate situations. I have learned that obstacles in life are put there by God to challenge us and force us to grow when we become too stagnant. Things don’t happen TO us they happen FOR us. I know I am not alone and I am aware that a lot of people are going through big changes in life and I am so excited for the new chapter ahead of us because it always gets better and better when you just go with the flow and let go of the past and anything that doesn’t serve you. My good buddy Nick told me recently when I was contemplating a situation and he said “if it doesn’t feel like a HELL YEAH, then it’s a HELL NO!” That has stuck with me and I have made sure I don’t lower my standards or settle for anything less than spectacular! Perspective is everything in life and making the shift to a positive outlook on every situation makes you unstoppable! Idaho people truly are a different breed! The most beautiful people inside and out who share the love for the outdoors and truly live life to the fullest! I have so much love for all the people up at Tamarack and hope it grows in the right direction 🙏🏽🤙🏽 Love you guys!
