Interference: The Interactive Art of Daniel Rozin @museumartlight April 15, 2026 – September 27, 2026 For over three decades, @dannyrozin has created interactive artworks that place the viewer at the center of image-making. Working with technology, custom software, physical materials, and kinetic motion, Rozin uses his practice to investigate how images are formed, perceived, and transformed through participation. Across his career, he has developed bodies of work exploring themes such as pixelation, time, Darwinian evolution, portraiture, Cartesian and polar grids, and optical illusion.  In Interference, Rozin turns his focus explicitly to interference patterns—moiré effects—the shimmering, unstable visual phenomena that emerge when two patterned systems are overlaid and set into motion. These effects were extensively explored by Op Art artists in the 1960s, and most notably by Jesús Rafael Soto, who over several decades created hundreds of works investigating visual interference, vibration, and optical instability.  This exhibition is conceived as a homage to Soto, whose pioneering explorations of moiré and perceptual motion have been a lasting source of inspiration for Rozin’s own investigations into vision, movement, and the active role of the observer.

Daniel Rozin (@dannyrozin ) has captured the art and beauty of reflection in unexpected places🪞 "RGB Peg Mirror" is the first of Rozin's Mechanical Mirrors series to reflect viewers in full color using red, green, and blue knobs that tilt towards light. A-piece-A-week Ball Chain Mirror 2025 , 400 18 inch segments of ball chain, motors, camera, electronics, custom firmware and software. Just completed this new piece, hope to show it soon somewhere. Started working on it for the lush clinking sound of chains rubbing against each other, and the matching shimmering of the chrome balls.

A-piece-A-week Weave Mirror - 2007 768 C shaped prints 768 motors, video camera, control electronics. Weave Mirror assembles 768 motorized C-shaped Egyptian papyrus prints along the surface of a picture plane that texturally mimics a homespun basket. A seemingly organic smoky portrait comes in focus to the sound made by the sculpture’s moving parts. Informed by traditions of both textile design and new media, the Weave Mirror paints a picture of viewers using a gradual rotation in greyscale value on each C-ring. A playful juxtaposition between the rustic and photographic, this sculpture is suspended from the ceiling. Its functional circuitry and wiring is visible from behind, exposing its craft, shown at London Victoria and Albert Museum in 2009 @vamuseum

A-piece-A-week Circles Mirror 2005 Circles Mirror is a mechanical sculpture made of 900 overlapping circles with patterns printed on them and connected to motors, computer and video camera. Any person standing in front of the piece is reflected on the piece by the circles rotating to expose more dark/ bright patterns as needed. The piece utilizes 12 different patterns of radial gradation from black to white which are randomly placed on the board. This piece is the first of my mechanical mirrors to incorporate elements of computer graphics and as such is an interesting middle between my print and physical works. A bit of a homage to Chuck Close Who’s pixelated paintings often comprise of tiny doodles each making a pixel, but each also has a personality

A-piece-A-week, Shiny Balls Mirror 2003. The piece is made of 921 chrome balls that move in and out of black aluminum tubes. The piece shines like a jewel and has a bright high pitch sound, it reflects you with a low res image and then reflects you again 921 times on the surface of the chrome balls. It’s an exercise in micro vs macro. The curved front surface of the piece meant that each tube and mechanism has different length, that added about three months to the making. I think it was worth it. After years at ITP @itp_nyu the piece debuted publicly in my show at Israel Museum @israel_museum in 2003 and has not been shown since.

A-piece-A-week Trash Mirror 2001. Even though I built this piece after Wooden Mirror I imagined it first, but it seamed a bit risky so I built Wooden Mirror first. It’s made of 500 pieces of trash I collected in the streets of NYC and in my pockets. The piece has a camera and tilts the pieces to create an animated reflection of the viewer. I like its rough appearance and the notion of inflicting digital order on a messy substance like trash… The piece suggests that we are perhaps best reflected in what we choose to discard rather than what we cherish. This piece was first shown at bitforms gallery @bitforms in 2001. It was my first solo show and also the gallery’s first. Still my gallery after 24 years…

A-piece-A-week - Broken Red Mirror 2000 , I made this piece to honor and feature Red Burns, founder of @itp_nyu . It’s a site-specific installation comprising a broken mirror on one wall and a broken image on the opposite wall. Standing in the special point, the broken mirror gathers the broken picture and the image of Red is revealed. It is an anamorphic glass mirror sculpture. I like how it is interactive even though it has no moving parts. It makes one viewer feel special. After years at ITP It got its public debut at the @Israel_Museum in 2003 when I had a solo exhibition there and then in 2009 at the @exploratorium when I had a show there.

A-piece-A-week ,Wooden Mirror 1999 People usually know about my art because of this piece. It’s made of 825 wooden tiles with motors and connected to a camera. It recreates your image by tilting the wooden tiles towards or away of a light source becoming pixels. This became the first of a series I call Mechanical Mirrors which has tens of pieces. I showed it in SIGGRAPH 2000 @acmsiggraph and people still tell me they saw it there… It was later shown by @bitforms in ARCO @feriaarco Madrid and got lots of press. This piece still lives happily at NYU’s ITP department where it greets me daily. The piece has proven to be a miracle of robustness, still working fine after 26 years 24/7

A-piece-A-week , I’ll try to post a piece every week starting from the most ancient… Easel 1997 got my art practice started. it’s an interactive sculpture that lets you paint with live video. Touch displays were not available at the time so I had to invent a whole computer vision system to get the brushing working. There were three video sources and you chose by dipping the brush in a can. The results were not saved, and tended to look like cubist mosaics. Easel won an @arselectronica award which really got me my first exhibition opportunities.
