Spring cookbook season is in full swing, and among my favorite new cover designs is Modern Australian Baking by Christopher Thé. What sets this cover apart from several of this season’s other noteworthy baking books is not just its undeniable beauty, but the way it so strongly evokes a sense of place. This design is a celebration of Australian nationality, seasonality, and local ingredients, and reflects the sentiment that Thé proclaims in the very first line of his introduction: “This book is a love story to the only land I have known.” The latest Headnotes post guides readers through the cover—from the unique ingredients in the show-stopping Geraldton Wax Cheesecake, to the long afternoon shadows, to the Australian red earth color palette—while paying tribute to the talents of the creative team that brought it to life (link in bio). I haven’t been for a few years and I’m pleased to find the book design community alive and well. Nice to see you all. This books content builds on the last two and takes it to the next level. The beauty comes from Josh’s innovation and inspired vision. As the designer I honestly just try and capture and communicate some of that and try to not muck it up. And then there’s the team. Well, that was quite a ride. And a not so quiet a night. I’ve had a few days to recover and a little time to reflect. The whole shebang was better than one could have hoped for. The sense of community and the spirit that the filmmakers and the audience bought to this party was glorious and humbling. Despite some technical hick-ups, and perhaps because of them, good will and good humor triumphed. It seems it’s one thing to make something, but a whole other thing to have that baby screen. The energy and involvement form the audience let loose an avalanche of endorphans. A very big congratulations to Mat Lindsay @mrmatlindsay and @patnourse for their most excellent book Ester. I probably don’t need to go to photo shoots everyday to ‘art direct’ but I found it necessary to do so in this case primarily to sample everything. Truly amazing food. I was very pleased to get some charcoal illustration in there too. The cover illustration was completed while camping using charcoal from the fire 🔥 see the ‘moss office’ final shot.
