Have you seen these logos anywhere? They were designed by me. Each has a message to convey beyond the words. They each tell a story within their colors, forms, and type treatments. When’s the last time you had a long hard look at your logo and ask yourself if it’s telling the right story?

So many of you are dying to know how the Birthmonth Fundraiser ended, right? No? Well here it is anyway! These fine people contributed $1300! This money will cover 13 artists to join the Hoosier Art Salon and enter it’s 102nd annual exhibition. Thank you to all who believe in this initiative and were willing to support it financially this year. Please help me say thank you to all these folks 🫶. Also can we get a special whoop whoop for all the artists who donated to the initiative? Y’all are out here looking out for each other and I’m here for it! Earlier today 13 artists were invited to participate in the BIPOC Hoosier Artist Grant along with an additional 20 who were invited for the Espinoza Hoosier Latino Artist Grant. I’ll share more updates as these artists accept their grants to give you the opportunity to “meet” them and congratulate them. I’ll also share updates as artists get accepted into the show so you can cheer them on. There’s still a long way to go but we are hopeful that we will make an even bigger impact in the racial demographic makeup of this year’s show. Stay tuned!

Today is the last day for my birthmonth fundraiser! I know you are tired of seeing these posts but this initiative is important to me and this is the last day I’ll ask for donations for this. We are 84% of the way to the goal! Can you help me raise the remaining $225? If 9 people each gave $25, we’ll get there! Lately I’ve been thinking about the new artists I will invite to receive this grant and I can’t wait to share more information about them, but that will come in the next few weeks. For now you can learn more about two artists who were invited last year. Esayas Zerazion is a scratchboard artist. To my knowledge, this is a medium that has not been represented too well in the Salon, and although he was invited last year, unfortunately he did not get accepted. The Hoosier Art Salon is a juried exhibition, but we have our hopes that he will be accepted this year! Kevin Wilson on the other hand has been accepted numerous times with his drawings. Both artists are meticulous in the level of detail that goes into their works with their precision and fine line work worthy of this exhibition. One question I haven’t answered is the why I’m doing this. There’s several reasons. One, opportunities like this didn’t exist for me when I was very active as a visual artist and one thing about me is that if I can make a difference for others I will. Two, there is a huge disparity in the demographic makeup of the state and the demographic representation of the Salon. A show with deep roots in its representation of the state of Indiana is not representing the 20% population that is BIPOC. And three, BIPOC artists face more barriers in their careers and something needs to be done about it. So here I am putting in my grain of sand. Although it’s more like I’m rallying you all as donors to put your grains of sand to do something about this. So please put in your grain of sand for this initiative and donate today!

My birthmonth fundraiser has moved up to 80% over night. We are down to the last two days. Can we do 10% today and 10% tomorrow? Just $280 shy of my goal to fund 14 artists to this year’s Hoosier Art Salon. Let me show you some of the talented artists who got into the show last year who will be invited again this year. Sepideh Motevasel’s work has a pop cubist feel to it but it is presented flat and layered with color and pattern, while India Cruse-Griffin’s work employs collage and layers of muted and warm colors. Both artists begin their works doing extensive research into the stories of the people, places, and time periods they depict making for incredibly deeply layered and stunning works worthy of the Hoosier Art Salon. Last year, India won the First Time Exhibitor award essentially being the best in the show among all the artists exhibiting for the first time. These two artists demonstrate the importance of this grant and underscore why they need to be supported. Please scan my code and help send more artists to the Hoosier Art Salon. No Venmo? No problem. Message me to donate in other ways.

It’s the last few days of my birthmonth fundraiser! I’m 61% of the way to my goal. Thank you to everybody who has helped my wish become a reality. While I may not make it to my goal, I’m extremely grateful for all of the support that has come in for our BIPOC arts community including artists like Yoshimi Fuqua and JC Lofenia who will be invited to participate again this year. I’ve already raised more than last year and that’s a win in my books. If you wish to support this initiative you may do so by scanning the Venmo qr code or message me for a link or other ways to send in your donation. If 28 friends each send $20, I will meet my goal. Can you all make it happen by Thursday? The challenge is on! The BIPOC Hoosier Artist Grant is an initiative I launched last year to cover the membership dues and entry fees associated with the Hoosier Art Salon and its annual exhibition. Both fees add up to $100 which can represent a barrier for many artists in Indy’s BIPOC community. By removing this barrier, we level the playing field for these artists giving them a chance to showcase in Indiana’s longest running art show. Support this initiative if you want to see more diversity in this exhibition.

It’s been a year since my Japan Journey powered by the Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship. One year later I’m reflecting on this journey to sit down and write my report. I won’t share all the details but I will say that the Daniel before this journey and the Daniel reflecting today are two different people. Please enjoy my 31 day journey condensed into two minutes. For any artist thinking about applying for CRAF, I highly encourage you to give it ago and if you are planning to go to Japan, feel free to ask me questions. I learned so much about the public transit and the ethics of visiting shrines and temples as well as some tricks to winning prizes in the ufo machines 😅. March was a month of adjustments. Adjusting to my new schedule, to my lack of a workplace, to the abundance of free time. I kicked off the month visiting the @indylatinaartists show at the @eiteljorgmuseum . The variety of work in this show was insane. I found several works that really caught my eye. Later I went to visit the KIND Gallery at the airport with @aby__c to canvas the space for an upcoming exhibition I’m curating. The exhibition will open later this year and will feature artists from both @lampindiana cohorts. Later, @thirdspace.photo.indy invited me to go to @fonsecatheatreco for their Vote stage play. This show was both funny and heart warming. That weekend I attended Pokepalooza with Izzy and Tony. It was all our first time going to a Pokémon TCG event and we walked away happy campers especially Tony who won a big 3D printed Squirtle figure. The following week Saki, @giselle_trujillo_imhof and I showed up to celebrate @vanessamonfreda birthday where I joined a bestie tattoo club with them. I’ll share that tattoo later. Later, Saki and I went to the @irtlive to see their production of English. I thoroughly enjoyed the code and accent switching in this production to differentiate between English and Farsi. It was genius! The following day I went to the @phoenixtheatreindy to see RE-ENTRY, a stage play about formerly incarcerated women. This production opened my eyes to the messed up system that is incarceration. I then got to go see the new Cowboy Couture exhibition at the E. I not only enjoyed the garments on display but the historical information dealing with immigration and the influence of Latino culture. The E continues to win me over as one of very few museums in Indy that is actually trying to appeal to Latinos. Throughout the month I started visiting @eaglecreekpark_indy again in search of otters and seagulls. I’m adjusting to giving myself these trips to connect with nature and reset. There’s lots more to adjust but I look toward April with hope for a better version of me. - #monthlyrecap #videojournal #march #indy #art
