Tomorrow is the last day to visit The World is Sleepwalking at @drugomore ๐ŸŒŠ The World is Sleepwalking emerged from a personal feeling that I believe is also collective: the sensation of being crossed by images, facts, and ideologies that reach our consciousness without us even realizing it. In a time shaped by technological acceleration and the proliferation of synthetic content, the exhibition reflects on how these images do not simply represent the world, but actively participate in transforming it. Through the works on view, the project seeks to question the narratives that shape our present. Iโ€™m truly grateful to the wonderful team at Drugo More, Davor, Ivana, Dubi, and Barbara, for the professionalism with which they carry forward their research, and to the extraordinary artists: @zachblas , @hawaidolphino , @malpractice.network (@ckiarer @_marcin.ratajczyk ), and @most_dismal_swamp , for giving shape to these reflections. It was also wonderful to explore Rijeka, a vibrant and multicultural city, and to meet its people. Iโ€™ll carry with me the memory of these intense days, made of hard work, beers, baccalร  mantecato, and long conversations in my fav language ๐Ÿ™ƒ. Sleepwalking Through the Apocalypse: Art as a Wake Up Call for AI Fatigue There is a certain genre of AI-critical art that arrives pre-loaded with its conclusions: technology bad, humans lost, screens everywhere, game over. "The World Is Sleepwalking", curated by Daniela Cotimbo at the Filodrammatica Gallery in Rijeka, is not that exhibition. The four artists gathered here are not technophobes issuing warnings from the analogue high ground. Meet the curator of ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™’๐™ค๐™ง๐™ก๐™™ ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™Ž๐™ก๐™š๐™š๐™ฅ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ก๐™ ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ programme: DANIELA COTIMBO (@danielacot ) is an independent curator, lecturer, and media theorist. In 2018 she founded @re_humanism , a curatorial platform exploring the relationship between contemporary art and advanced technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence. Her research investigates the ethical, social, and political impacts of AI through artistic practices, outlining new trajectories for human and technological sustainability. She has curated projects for galleries, museums, and festivals, and since 2018 has been a regular collaborator with Digitalive, the digital arts program of the Romaeuropa Festival. So happy to be part of this extraordinary issue of ARTnews, alongside so many friends, colleagues, and truly inspiring artists. I contributed a review of โ€œPointing Nemo. Beyond Space Towards the Abyssโ€, an exhibition by the collective IOCOSE โ€” winners of the previous edition of Re:humanism โ€” curated by Federica Patti. The show, on view until 26 May at CUBO Unipol in Bologna, reflects on a future that โ€œcontinues to be narrated as a horizon to be conqueredโ€, asking whether โ€œimagination might instead choose a different direction: not chasing mythologised elsewheres, but reopening spaces of possibility that are already hereโ€. We are very happy to share the installation views of Collective Memory by @nicolaslamas , the latest intervention curated by Re:humanism for the OVERTON WINDOW project at the @materia_gallery_rome โ€˜s vetrine. โ€œIn an era marked by informational overabundance, recomposing this archive of the existent becomes a way to overcome the experiential paralysis in which our imagination has long found itself, identifying forms of continuity and evolution. In this way, Collective Memory exploits the idea of shared knowledge to guide a different perspective on our relationship with emerging technologies. The bronze cast of a Kenyanthropus platyops skullโ€”a species of extinct hominid that lived approximately 3.5 million years agoโ€”and a wasp nest, a fragile remnant of a non-human collective intelligence, are fused together and placed within the frame of a server that evokes contemporary data flows, digital infrastructures, and information networks. On Friday, November 14th, at Sala 1, Lasciami Cadere, a solo exhibition by Daniele Spanรฒ, accompanied by my critical text. โ€œThe project explores the ambiguity of images in the age of digital hypertrophy, gathering research and insights from the past two years while focusing on the image of the fall and the ensuing search for fragile balances. The artist stages a multimedia journey composed of precarious installations: screens, sculptures, and other ephemeral systems appear before the viewer in their own vulnerability, concealingโ€” as in the case of image-emitting devicesโ€” their main content. The images, no longer visible, turn into luminous traces; they are, in the artistโ€™s words, โ€œghosts struggling to reveal themselves, lights emitted by a body we cannot see.โ€ Here, the viewer, deprived of the possibility of recognising the content of the transmission, is forced to rely on something unknown and beyond experience. This condition does not differ much from the relationship we entertain daily with media images: even when contents appear in their supposed objectivity, we are compelled to question their truthfulness and the effects their circulation exerts upon us. Todayโ€™s images are often described as โ€œoperationalโ€โ€”contents conceived by machines for other machinesโ€”and as such, they are manipulable both in fact and in intent. Reality thus becomes an unstable device, much like Spanรฒโ€™s delicate installations. The artist invokes the act of falling as a last attempt to escape the complex conditions in which contemporary narratives find themselves.
