Beginning April 2, 2026 a selection of photos from the series A Happy Marriage by Daniela Comani is on view in the exhibition Tragicomica at Museum MAXXI in Rome.
“A Happy Marriage began in 2003 with five portraits of a couple, where I played the roles of both woman and man. The series continued with everyday scenes of couple life such as cooking together, taking walks, shopping, driving, traveling, or sleeping. A focus of this series was the performative aspect, where traditional gender stereotypes were (re)enacted.”
Tragicomica - Perspectives on Italian art from the mid-20th century to today
curated by Andrea Bellini and Francesco Stocchi
April 2, 2026 - September 20, 2026
MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, Rome
A broad, multidisciplinary reinterpretation of Italian cultural production from the post-war period to the present day, through the works of over 140 artists, a rich publication and an extensive public program.
The project stems from a distinctive feature of Italian culture: the peculiar tendency to respond to tragedy with irony.
Through the filter of the tragicomic, the exhibition recounts how many Italian artists have used comedy, self-irony and paradox as tools of criticism and as an antidote to tragedy.
Tragicomica explores these themes across cultural production in a broad sense, including cinema, theatre, architecture, literature, and philosophy.
In collaboration with Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève.
