Schubert Piano Trio in B-flat, D. 898 ✨ @concertgebouw 🎥 by: @daniel_gronsfeld 🙏 “A glance at Schubert’s trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear, all the world is fresh and bright again.” – R. Schumann This quote is probably the best description one could find of this incredible trio! We’ve been performing this piece quite a lot this past season, and honestly—it’s hard to put into words how special it is. Schubert wrote it in 1827, just a year before he died, but there’s such warmth, grace, and ease in the music. It flows so naturally, with melodies that seem to appear out of nowhere and then stay with you even after the concert. It’s often called the “happier” of the two trios, and there’s definitely a sense of light running through it. There’s something quietly moving underneath—the kind of beauty that comes from someone who knew real darkness as well. • • • Here are a few things that are good to know about Schubert: 1️⃣ He didn’t live long—but wrote an incredible amount of music. Schubert died at just 31, yet left behind over 1,500 works—including more than 600 songs, symphonies, chamber works, and piano music. 2️⃣ He revolutionized song and chamber music. Schubert gave the piano equal voice in his songs and infused his chamber music with deep emotion. His trios and quartets are filled with some of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies. 3️⃣ He struggled with self-doubt but left a timeless legacy. Schubert often felt overwhelmed by life’s hardships. “I feel myself to be the most unfortunate, the most miserable being in the world.” - from his letters 4️⃣ Despite illness and poverty, he kept composing. From his early 20s, Schubert battled illness (likely syphilis) and financial struggles.
