Exploring some new ideas in an 8"x10" pen plot. I did a lot of work here to build in imperfections.

Been a minute since I've posted but I'm slowly returning to creating pictures. Here I'm playing with algorithms to distribute squiggly lines. This is a digital work but this algorithm would work well with the pen plotter.

HANDS: a mural painted in 10 hours by over 80 volunteers who didn't know what they were painting.
1: the mural hanging inside @ballandsocket before the reception
2: the mural hanging in situ, in its new home
3: the mockup Dan Gries made with @processing_core from a site-visit planning photo
4: a closer photo of the mural. see those painted dots!
5: me, tired/overwhelmed/happy it's done and that it works

We made a mural! Here are some process shots.
Official unveiling today 5-6 at @ballandsocket !
I should have mentioned this sooner but I've been a bit of a mess! But my recovery from surgery is going well.
This will be the fourth time Daniel Bernier (@designischoice ) and I have collaborated, and this time we were joined by Rita Lombardi (@rita_lombardi_photo ), a full partner in the design and completion of this project.
Created with code, executed by hand. Pencil marks laboriously placed onto boards using our custom stencil. Over 34,000 dots of paint applied by volunteers who came together at Ball and Socket. The mural is 8' x 36', painted over nine large panels, and it is installed in the Arcade at Ball and Socket. It will be there for a while.
After all of the planning, coding, and designing together, I was unable to be present at the actual painting due to my surgery. So I'll be seeing it in person for the first time today. Can't wait!
I'm extremely grateful to everyone at Ball and Socket and to my art partners Daniel and Rita. It was such a a pleasure to work on this together!
I took another moment to enjoy some minimalism as I recover from surgery. All is going very well.
This kraft paper is an acid-free alternative to the corrugated paper whose aesthetic I've always loved, maybe because it connects me to my father who worked in the box industry. But then again who doesn't love brown paper?
The picture is generated with computer code using random choices. The fills are intended to invoke purple irises, subject to probabilities to separate the colors vertically.

Doing well, recovering from surgery, and finding a little peace in geometric minimalism.

Hoping this will help after years of constant pain. Recovery will be long but I'll gradually be able to do more and more.
If you're facing something similar, reach out. I'm grateful to two local artist friends who coached me through this and I'll be happy to do the same for you.
To answer the inevitable questions:
1. No, I didn't injure myself, this is probably just the consequences of physical neglect, which is hard to accept but I'm moving forward with positivity and an eagerness to get stronger,
2. L3, L4, and L5,
3. Yes I know the beard is a weird pattern of dark, gray, and bald patches.
Hoping to return to art making when my body allows it.

ARTIST PROFILE: Dan Gries
Dan Gries crafts algorithms with computer code to generate images, which take physical form as digital prints or pen plotter drawings. The inkjet prints are produced at high resolution on fine art paper, while the plotter drawings are executed by a robotic arm that renders linework with precision. His work intentionally eschews artificial intelligence, relying on iterative processes: his programs are written with full artistic intention and control.
