THE OBSERVER’S GUIDE TO JAPANESE VENDING MACHINES is now available. From rarely visited corners of Tokyo to the temple grounds of Kyoto to the villages of the Kii Peninsula, vending machines dispensing coffee, tea, cigarettes, and soup are everywhere in Japan. This book reveals how ever-present and varied these machines are, how integral they are to daily life, and how, when viewed with the eye of a keen observer, they can reveal the everyday scenes of a place that’s often only depicted by its most iconic sites. * 1,000 copies / signed and numbered * Hardcover / Cloth-bound / Smyth sewn * Foil-stamped debossed cover * 156 pages / 146 photographs * 80 lb. paper * 7 x 9.33 inches * Printed in Montreal Link in bio. tannerbowden.com/shop

THE BROOK YEAR TWO I run by this river at least once, sometimes three times a week. Every time I do it’s different, even just a few days apart. It’s harder to see in photos and videos during peak summer when the forest is grown in, but on foot it’s something immediately perceived; if you’ve been somewhere often enough then slight changes register. A deeper hue of green, a drop in the water level that exposes a few more rocks, a change in the way the light filters through the trees, that registers. In the winter when the whole thing is covered in ice and snow it’s the sound of the water underneath that changes. A new season every week.

We are thrilled to have @danger_bowden join our ranks as an exhibitor! Tanner Bowden is a writer, editor, and photographer. Most of his work has something to do with focused observation, wherein otherwise unnoticed minor details are revealed and lead to an inevitably deeper understanding and connection with the natural and human world. We couldn’t be more excited to see you all on April 10th and 11th at the @karmabirdhouse for the inaugural @vermontartbookfair !!! See you there!

Vending machine totes! Still got some left on the website. Sturdy cotton canvas, and the best handle layout a tote can possibly have. Things I know with certainty that you can carry with it: - Groceries - Camera gear - Small dogs - 18 beers (or probably more!) - Running clothes, clean or sweaty - Bocadillos de jamón, a James Salter novel, a water bottle, and a denim shirt - Your old New Yorker tote that you no longer need because you have this one

First Frost // 10/10/2025 // The zinnias and dahlias last longer than we thought they would and I’d say looked their best right at the very end.

Fall Paddle Trip // 10/2022 // The Adirondacks always look good in October and the best way to explore them, I’d say, is by canoe. Plenty of creeks, couple of carries, and handmade PB&Js for all (if you prepare properly).

Dinner in Far East Russia. It starts with defrosting the fish. It ends with bowls of hollowed out crab legs (might’ve been just a little vodka in between).

Col de Balme // 08/2024 // Feel like I’ve been seeing a lot of Chamonix and Tour du Mont Blanc out there lately and it’s got me feeling nostalgic for European mountain huts.

Ran my first trail race last weekend. I'm not there, but UTMB is this weekend. Trail running is sort of nerdy, but during UTMB week it seems like it’s the biggest thing going on and Chamonix is the center of the world. I imagine more than a few tourists who have accidentally found themselves in that town during race week have wound up signing up for a 50k later on, the scene is that infectious. The European spectator appreciation for events like these is just so good, too. (These are from last year’s UTMB, this year I’ll be watching the race live stream from VT ☹️)
