All my years of skateboarding and snowboarding have finally caught up with me, and back surgery is now on the horizon. I’ll be undergoing a fusion in S1, L5, and L4—a life-changing procedure. The pain I’m experiencing is beyond words. It’s not just affecting my physical mobility; it’s also taking a toll on my mental health. My spinal cord is being pinched, and without treatment, the risk of paralysis is very real. But I’m not one to back down. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with adaptive athletes, it’s the power of resilience. We learn to adapt, overcome, and persevere. I’m endlessly grateful for the years I’ve spent on my board, for the friends and family who’ve stood by me, for the sponsors and supporters who’ve believed in me, and for the incredible athletes I’ve had the privilege to coach. Thank you to my wife for always standing beside me, love you to the moon! @amypurdygurl This is a tough chapter, but it’s not the end of my story. I may be down for now, but I’m not out. Last night we lost one of the best humans I’ve ever known. My brother, my dear friend, Brett Botelho. Brett was such a good man, he always put everyone else first, even when he was quietly carrying his own heavy weight. An amputee, a snowboarder, a hockey player, a board member of Adaptive Action Sports, a true friend to Amy and I, and a constant reminder of what grit, kindness, and joy actually look like. He loved dogs, Huckleberry absolutely adored him. He loved baseball, a good meal, the mountains, and saying yes to an adventure. We shared so many of those together, and I’ll carry them with me forever. Adaptive Action Sports was better because of Brett. I was better because of Brett.
