Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the landmark Obergefell vs Hodges Supreme Court decision which enshrined marriage equality in the United States. We were also delighted to see a few images from one of our favorite weddings today in PEOPLE, a celebration of love with stories from many different LGBTQ+ couples. They asked each of the couples featured a simple question: what does their marriage mean to them? As a gay couple ourselves, we never take lightly the immense honor of documenting LGBTQ+ weddings. We are proud to be a gay couple helping tell stories for and about our own community. But this wasn’t always the case. When Danforth Neal was first conceived (before we were even called Danforth Neal), we asked ourselves a serious question: how should we present ourselves publicly? Do we tell prospective couples that we’re partners not just in business, but in life? Back then, there was tremendous fear that we might alienate ourselves, scare off couples before they even had the chance to get to know us. Ultimately we decided to lean into who we are, splashed a big photo of us holding hands smack dab at the top of our website, and realized that maybe we actually wanted to scare off the people who might have a problem with us. Now, years later, we are ourselves married. I get to do this crazy, beautiful thing with my husband. I get to call him my husband! Today we honor the many queer people who loved courageously and fought heroically for the recognition and rights we enjoy today, but we also remain vigilant and understand that the fight for LGBTQ+ equality is still presently unfolding.
