You have a dance specific question… I have the answers for you. Arabesque or attitude derriĆØre giving you that pinching or crunching feeling in your lower back? Your QL and paraspinals are working overtime in inner range spinal extension, while the rest of the system might not be supporting the movement well enough. A higher leg doesn’t come from forcing more range. It comes from building: - core + glute support - standing leg stability - strength into spinal extension - control through the full posterior sling If you skip those foundations and just keep pushing height that niggling lower back pinching feeling isn’t going to go away. Pain and discomfort in dance steps isn’t something you should just accept, there’s ALWAYS a way. If this sounds familiar, book in and let’s figure out what YOUR body needs to create extension without the discomfort. 3 things to consider when flexibility training… that doesn’t include stretching. 1) LIFT HEAVY Like in all directions — like a normal athlete and gym goer. Don’t try and make it dance or flexibility specific. Strength training improves tissue tolerance and gives your nervous system more confidence in bigger ranges of motion. 2) DON’T OVERSTRETCH But how much is too much? I’d personally say what you’re doing in class is probably enough. As long as you’re hitting your end range once a week, your body won’t forget it. More stretching isn’t always more progress — your body adapts better to consistency than intensity. 3) START LOADING END RANGE But only when you can actually control these movements, otherwise it becomes a stretch again and it’s not really being loaded. Long-term flexibility comes from strength + control, not just passive range. A week to train differently. Not by doing more, but by understanding more. The Ballet Project Intensive is designed for adult dancers who want to develop their skills in a way that is thoughtful, structured, and sustainable. If this resonates with you, we’d love to dance with you in July. #adultballet #adultballetcommunity #adultballerina #dancescience #dancephysio

It’s the easy and seemingly simple things that we like to brush over. We like to skip to the fun stuff or dare I say it… think we’re too good for the basics. But our basics are there for a reason. I have clients everyday that can aerial or lift 100kg or do the craziest tricks yet are still experiencing pain. I call my self a simple physio. Because I never do anything fancy. I work out that small bit that you’re missing and either add it back in or take it away from your training. Don’t skip over the easy. Don’t skip over the basics. Maybe you’ll save yourself a trip to come and see me in person!? 🦓 Work with me in clinic @prehab_uk šŸ§˜šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Move with me online @dpuk_studios 🩰 Dance with me in person @the.ballet.project #dancephysio #balletphysio #physio #ballet #dance

Repost and overshare from the other app But have been very reflective when thinking about my work, where I’m at and what I want to make my work look like in future. I know I still feel a huge sense of failure when I look back at this part of my life but still trying to continue embracing it for everything that it’s led me too now. It feels weird and scary posting about it more but only out of the fear of being perceived in trying something fully that didn’t work out. (And also how much are we told in physio and as a clinician not to post bc it’s ’unprofessional’. But, my work is slowly bringing me back to this place and that’s really fun, trying not to resist that) I feel so inspired every day by members of the adult dance community who share their dance journeys online. I feel so inspired by being in those rooms of people who are moving for the love of it. So if posting more about my own journey and what got me here today can normalise the journey of trying, failing, changing direction and coming back to it once again then let’s go. I am so unbelievably excited to dance with everyone again in summer at our adult ballet intensive - all the good vibes incoming. 🦓 Work with me in clinic @prehab_uk šŸ§˜šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Move with me online @dpuk_studios 🩰 Dance with me in person @the.ballet.project #dancephysio #dancer #ballet #balletphysio

Somehow this is now my actual work?? I’m going into year 4 since the intial ideas of putting the online platform together which blows my mind a little. This whole project came out of a really rough year, it was like my little proof to myself that I could do something pretty cool amungst the chaos going on around me. Come and join me online for follow along; - Pilates - Stretching - Self Massage - Meditations I’ve recently dramatically reduced my in person teaching hours somewhere else because the online platform has finally allowed me too. (Part of the other 10 hours of work I’ve been doing in the week but I don’t advertise online so no one really knows I do it) This now gives me so much more space in my week to be able to do a much better job on a smaller amount of things rather than spreading myself too thin. But it didn’t happen overnight; - I did 1 year of website building and filming completely unpaid. - I did 1 year of more filming and website work with enough money to spend on a coffee a month and a web designer to code and design in the background. - I did 1 year of breaking even. Working with a social media manager whilst I moved into a new position within my in person business and quit working for anyone but myself (which was really scary). - Year 4 - I can finally use this platform as a form of income which gives me so much more freedom to continue working on fun projects and bring a better quality of content and in person work. @dpuk_studios #onlinestudios #physio #onlinebuisness #studios #pilates

Your nervous system 🧠 What even is it and why do I talk about it so much in the work that I do? Because flexibility isn’t just about muscles — it’s about your brain deciding what feels safe. Your nervous system is the communication network between your brain, spinal cord, and body. Its job is simple: keep you safe. When you move into a stretch, your brain is constantly asking: ā€œIs this safe, or should I protect?ā€ If it senses threat — instability, pushing too hard, holding your breath, or feeling out of control — it switches into fight or flight mode. In that state, your body increases muscle tension and limits range to protect your joints. Which means forcing a stretch usually backfires. But when your nervous system feels safe and supported, the opposite happens. Your brain allows muscles to relax, guards less, and suddenly that end range feels more accessible. For dancers, improving flexibility isn’t just about stretching deeper. It’s about teaching your nervous system that your end range is a place it can trust and also about feeling safe in your training environment. ✨ That’s why in my work we focus on: • Control in end range • Slow, intentional loading • Breathing and regulation • Building strength where you want mobility Work with me 1-1 @prehab_uk Work with me online @dpuk_studios Come and dance in the studio with me @the.ballet.project #dancephysio #dancer #flexibility
