Let’s talk about muscles 🤓📖
•
A new series, to look in a bit more depth at some of the over 600 muscles that make you move!
•
We’ll consider common problems when a muscle gets tight or “pulled”, and some tips and tricks to help stretch or strengthen them. 💪
•
Love to hear feedback and suggestions for muscles you’d like me to include 💡

Laryngeal Manual Therapy (LMT), Vocal Massage, Manual Circumlaryngeal Therapy, Mathieson’s LMT (MLMT), Vocal Physiotherapy. The list goes on…
•
In their basic forms, they are all variations on the same theme: manual therapy (kneading, circular motions, passive stretching, pressing etc.) applied to the structures around the larynx, neck, jaw and shoulders.
•
The main difference at the moment between which term is used seems to be dependent on WHO is providing the treatment.
•
Personally, unless you’re a physio or osteo, I wouldn’t be having any treatment around my neck from anyone else. For a whole range of reasons, but always safety first.
•
Maybe a topic to dive into for a podcast forum…who wants to come chat about it?

Staring at your computer all day at work? 💻
•
Doom scrolling on the sofa like the gorgeous gremlin you are? 👹

Im here to remind you to take a few minutes and
👏 MOVE 👏 YOUR 👏 NECK 👏

It’s been a week since the London Marathon, so it’s probably the right time to stretch your quads if you haven’t yet…
•
If you’re just starting your running journey inspired by the fastest marathon run by a man carrying a fridge (insane strength) or woman dressed as a swimmer (she liked my sign), then do yourself a favour and
👏 STRETCH 👏 YOUR 👏 QUADS!
•
REGULARLY.
•
I love this particular stretch because it gets the stretch across the hip nicely for the whole quads, and you don’t need to balance on one leg, so you can focus on breathing and relaxing into it! 🧘
•
Tight quads, no stretching and increasing the amount you’re running too quickly can contribute to knee and hip pain, so don’t neglect it! If you’ve had knee pain and it’s not going away - what are you waiting for? Come see me!
•
Give this stretch a go and let me know what you think!🙂↕️

📕Cross-training 💪🏼
•
•
Cross-training (a variety of exercise modes used to develop a specific component of fitness) is a great way to improve and maintain fitness and strength, and minimise injury risk.
•
Taking part in a variety of different exercise modalities helps to prevent overuse and stress injuries from repeating the same pattern of movement too often - a common issue for performers doing the same show 8 times a week!
•
It also helps stimulate your brain, avoiding exercise boredom - and exercise in general is great for mental and physical health!
•
It doesn’t have to be strenuous - walking in nature, a gentle jog, swimming, cycling are all low-impact activities that can contribute to a robust and well-rounded lifestyle ☺️
•
What’s your favourite cross-training activity?
RICE is OUT, PEACE & LOVE is IN!
Forget rest & ice alone — updated research shows soft tissue injuries need more than just RICE. The new gold standard? PEACE & LOVE ✌🏼 & ❤️
✅ Protection
✅ Elevation
✅ Avoid anti-inflammatories
✅ Compression
✅ Education
➕
✅ Load
✅ Optimism
✅ Vascularisation
✅ Exercise
📖 Why the switch?
A 2019 BJSM article by Dubois & Esculier highlighted that inflammation is a necessary phase of healing, and early controlled loading (not rest!) promotes better long-term outcomes.
🗣️ Movement, mindset, and patient education matter more than passive treatments. Time to rethink the ice pack! 🧊

Tour life throws challenges and opportunities in equal measure: today ended up being (I think) my first solo hike ever! A nice opportunity to exhale, recharge and re-evaluate surrounded by nature. 🌱

Fantastic morning (my second one but we forgot to take photos the first time 🤦🏼♂️) observing the Performer’s Voice Clinic at Wythenshawe Hospital!
•
Had some spare time so we took a peek at how my vocal folds are looking - swipe to see my happy larynx! (Still looking good, thanks @toriburnay !)

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time with me @lucy_dexter_@jamesalexsmithson

Happy World Voice Day! 🎶
•
•
Technique is great, and learning about your voice and how to use it safely and sustainably to create the sound you want is incredibly important and valuable…
BUT!
words, meaning, emotion and telling a story are just as important (if not more so!). So don’t forget sometimes to stop thinking and just sing like you mean it!
