Two weeks at Kaatsbaan for final rehearsals of postWinterreise. Thank you Kaatsbaan for providing an oasis of time and creativity for postWinterreise to move from the page and into the world. These images don’t do justice to the special energy of these days. It was a magical two weeks that somehow held the space for us to dive deep into our rehearsal process and stay open to the incredible work happening around us. As we worked our way through a score dense in ice, noise, poetry, and music a powerful alignment of artists brought to life the story of James Baldwin and his beloved Lucien Happersberger upstairs. We shared meals, and evenings digging into the histories and realities that shape our work. We worked hard, learned the ins and outs of the cyclical sound environment, and co-created the language of chamber music and ecological sound installation interactions. We shared the work for a full room of colleagues and new friends on Saturday, and left on Sunday afternoon deeply nourished by the time shared at Kaatsbaan. Today we get to work at Tanglewood for the premiere of postWinterreise on this Saturday. We can’t wait to share the work.

the cyclical sound environment // DigiMuse Festival Shanghai Concert Hall // just a few days ago bringing this living system to the stage with: Marlene Heiss, piano // @marlene.heiss Nova Krause, live electronics // @novks__ Daniele Lucchini, projections// @dan_digging Qingqing Ji, Performance production // @qingqing_ji the neck piece by Margherita Pevere, siphoning the vibration of my voice into the circuitry of material interactions, ice, steel, wood, threads… it was the first time bringing my creative work and research to the stage. Moved, honored, a little terrified. It was the culmination of three inspiring weeks of dialogue, research, and co-creation with artists, scholars, and curators in Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing, and Tianjin. Still only scratching the surface of the worlds China contains, but glad to have caught a glimpse these past weeks. Thank you Yang Wang // @sad_montage and @goetheinstitut Now to the premiere of postWinterreise at Tanglewood on April 25. Nun weiter denn, nur weiter… #premiere #art #music #climate

After a full day of co-leading workshops and artist talks @goetheinstitutchina Yang Wang came back to the Shanghai Concert Hall to see the cyclical sound environment. We decided to plug in his erhu, and send the sound through the installation’s material loops. With Nova Krause @novks__ live mixing and Daniele Lucchini‘s @dan_digging underwater film rolling it was a peak experience to sit back and see and hear it coming to life in the hands of others. It was beautiful. Thank you. Tomorrow we hang the ice. #shanghai #music #china #erhu #art

What a dream team! We are headed to Shanghai for the 2026 DigiMuse Festival to present the cyclical sound environment, colliding music and environmental history in an installation of meting ice, reverberating objects, and sonifjed climate data. Incredibly honored to be invited to present my own work on this stage after last year’s performance with Nico and the Navigators @nico_and_the_navigators . It has been an immense year of learning, research, and experimentation to reach this point and I can’t wait to share it. Excited to return to Shanghai in a few days as a fellow of the Goethe Institute and performer in the 2026 DigiMuse Festival at the Shanghai Concert Hall. with pianist and artistic researcher Marlene Heiß @marlene.heiss video and projections designer Daniele Lucchini @dan_digging media artist hero Nova Krause producer Qingqing Ji @qingqing_ji erhu and electronic musician Yang Wang @sad_montage I will present the cyclical sound environment at the Shanghai Concert Hall DigiMuse Festival on April 4. the cyclical sound environment is a sculptural sound installation of melting ice, flowing water, metal, and found materials. It both creates sound through its internal motion, amplified by embedded contact mics, and it transforms live musical sound using vibrating transducers to meld the live sound of voice and piano with the resonance of material in a state of change. It is a labyrinth of material sound possibilities, in which human, non-human, and technological forces (e)merge. In its core of melting ice and flowing water, the cyclical sound environment brings a shared global questions to audiences: climate and water. In its incorporation of found objects and the musical and sonic material that is played through its circuitry, it offers an adaptable structure for artists to bring unique stories, practices, and cultural realities into contact with shared global questions. I am particularly excited that with the support of the Goethe Institut and its center in Shanghai, I will work with the erhu player and electronic musician Yang Wang and visual designer Feifei Zhou @feisgram to imagine an iteration of the cyclical sound environment that intertwines Chinese and European environmental histories. More on this event to come. #art #music #environment #earth #shanghai Filmed by Daniele Lucchini

We are creating something strange, extraordinary, poetic, and reverberant. A material labyrinth of sound. I can’t wait to share this with the world next year. On the foot and slopes of the Dachstein Massif. To clear my head with mountain air, to gather film and sound with Daniele Lucchini @dan_digging and Kilian Jörg A few glaciers cling to the north-facing crest of the Dachstein. The Hallstätter, the Dachstein, the Großauer glaciers. The last fragments of the Würm ice sheet that covered the Alps in the last glacial maximum. In postWinterreise music is shaped by non-human forces, natural processes, of glacial ice, and materiality. The fragmentation of Schubert’s music follows the rate of glacial ice melt on the Dachstein, documented since the mid 19th century. Pitches detune following the curve of global carbon emissions since Schubert’s birth, synchronous with the industrial revolution’s first stirrings. Live voice and piano is transmitted through ice, water, metal, wood, and stone in a cyclical sound environment. So, a trip to the mountains was in order. Presenters seem hungry for projections too. Daniele, Kilian, and I were hungry for mountain air. The day that best matched, or mocked, our expedition was the first, foiled attempt to ascend the mountain. Fresh snow had fallen. Cold and powdery, light to kick even with an uphill gait. Ten centimeters at the valley’s head, and the forecast promised up to forty at higher elevations; not easy, but on the clear day we had, passable. A hiss-boom rush of a waterfall, pounding white-noise in the distance accompanied our ascent. As it grew louder and took on an uncanny sonic homogeny, its source came into view. Two yellow snow machine launched moisture over our path (a ski route it turned out), to keep the ground encased in enough frozen moisture to make the most of the shortening season. n the yellow snow cannon we’d found our subject for the day. Beneath the snow machines, our ascent became a comedy of mishaps. The moisture froze on our coats, and covered the deep powder with a crust, trapping legs with each step. The distant waterfall sound had become a mechanical roar that drowned out conversation. Yet, the absurdity of the moment, being blasted by human-made snow machines, making our attempt to reach the viewing point of a dwindling glacier impossible.
