šŸ“£JUST ANNOUNCED: Untitled Goose Game composer Dan Golding makes his live concert debut playing Honk with Orchestra Victoria for Indie Symphony II on July 3 and 4 at Hamer Hall. 🪿 ā€˜Untitled Concerto for Orchestra and Honk’ is a brand new arrangement of the ARIA and BAFTA nominated Untitled Goose Game soundtrack, which was created by Golding and features music by Claude Debussy. In 1992 I forced my parents to take me to see Aladdin six times, and in 2026 I got to meet the guy who wrote the songs and the score that made that film brilliant, the 8x Oscar, 11x Grammy, 1x Tony, 1x Emmy, 1x Razzie award winning Alan Menken (for Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, and so much more). And my amazing @em.vdn bought me tix to his show for Christmas, how did she know? And then just over a week earlier while shamelessly riding on @meganburslem ’s coattails I saw Jeff Goldblum speak and shake his hand. When I was a little older, after Aladdin, I also held a birthday party with a screening of The Lost World, and immediately regretted it as it was far scarier than I anticipated. Much less running and screaming today.

So last week after 10.5 years I ended my time at Swinburne and started as Professor of Media at Monash University in Caulfield. I really don’t quite know how to sum up more than a decade at one university except to say that I lucked out and caught the right place and the right people at the right time and that I am indescribably lucky to have worked with some of the absolute best people going around, as a straight-out-of-PhD Lecturer all the way up to my time as Head of Department. Where else would your colleagues farewell you by getting you a Cameo vid of Lando Calrissian himself, Billy Dee Williams, including a mention of my book Star Wars After Lucas and an all-time mispronunciation of Monash? Best farewell gift, or simply best gift ever? I’m genuinely gonna miss everyone so much.

Loved getting to work with @sydneysymphonyorchestra on our first @artofthescore show for the year, with the music of (who else) John Williams! A packed house and a terrific vibe, with great soloists from the orchestra including the brilliant @theaussieviolinist . As a side note Andrew and I got to try out a new look away from the orchestra blacks in an attempt to be a little more professional: extremely big thanks to Dr @meganburslem for being our style consultant, organiser, our egger-on, our enabler. @bucnicholas , @andrewjpogson and I have plenty of Art of the Score gigs coming in 2026 around Australia, including the music of James Horner, Joe Hisaishi, Hans Zimmer, and the freshly announced Lord of the Rings! Details on our website. šŸ“ø Photo credit: Jay Patel

Our first ever overseas trip as a family, to Japan for ten days, was an absolute dream. Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara with @em.vdn and our three year old who delighted in the trains, the level crossings, a morning of snow in Kyoto, and newfound friend Anpanman. We were definitely a bit apprehensive about travel with the kiddo, and there were definitely tricky moments, but on the whole it was so beyond worth it, even just to spend concentrated time together as a family, let alone the incredible place we were in. Also probably the hardest country to be vegetarian in that I have been to so far, but we survived. Em was not just star but photographer of many of these snaps, and the best travel con-conspirator I could have asked for 😘

Thrilled to be back on air tonight for another year (my eighth!) hosting Screen Sounds on the brilliant @abcclassic . Catch me every Saturday from 6pm-8pm, or anywhere around the world on catch up via the website or ABC Listen app, playing the greatest film and tv soundtracks, new and old. Tonight’s episode is a listen at the year ahead in scores, from Bridgerton and Dune, a sequel to The Social Network, and a new alien movie from Spielberg and Williams. Here’s to listening to the movies in 2026! šŸŽŠ

Probably cooked fewer really good meals in 2025 than in previous years, but still, here are a few I enjoyed. Also in 2025 I quit my job, performed as ā€˜soloist’ for a Concerto I wrote on stage at Hamer Hall with Orchestra Victoria, hosted another year of Screen Sounds on ABC Classic, and co-hosted more than 25 Art of the Score gigs with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and Auckland Philharmonia. And Mars First Logistics, one of my favourite games to have ever worked on, launched! Oh and there was the brilliant Goose Game exhibition at ACMI! I met Margaret Pomeranz and Jung Jae-il! I am probably forgetting other stuff! Good year! See you in the next one.

Today I’m finally able to get my soundtrack for Untitled Goose Game up on @bandcamp and away from places I’m not so keen on. All my music - Goose Game, Mars First Logistics, Frog Detective - will be coming down from Spotify because of the way they treat artists, their politics, and their embrace of AI. Catch me on Bandcamp and some of the better streaming platforms for now.
