The cottage is slowly coming together! It’s not quite there yet, but we are making progress. I’m feeling like the walls still need something. Maybe bigger art, a fresh paint color, or a wallpaper treatment that wraps all the way up into the skylight box? Just wait until you see what we have in store for the kitchen shelves and hood!
It’s been such a dream working with Hudson Valley Lighting Group to bring the vision for our New Orleans home to life. Lighting is where scale and silhouette can completely transform the energy of a space. From the brass picture lights illuminating our library to the sculptural centerpiece in the living room, every fixture was chosen to add a little something special to this house. Drop your lighting questions in the comments. Whether you’re struggling with picking the right scale, mixing finishes, or finding the perfect shape for your space, I’m here to help you see the light!

I worked with the amazing Hudson Valley Lighting Group to show you why a living room should have at least four light sources to create the best vibes. First, we have the chandelier, which I’m calling Ursula because she’s the undisputed queen of the room. Second are the table lamps featuring my own designs with @mymitzi . Third, we added picture lights to give a library-chic glow to our custom built-ins. And lastly, we have decorative downlights to highlight the gallery wall. You know what, I actually need a fifth source, like a floor lamp! Let’s go find one from HVLG! Happy AAPI Month! Channeling my Cathay flight attendant era in this fit today. It’s been over 15 years since I was last in Hong Kong, but that city truly kick started my creative journey—from studying abroad to flying across the globe.
I know the artist path isn’t always the first (or second or third lol) choice for Asian families. My mom didn’t always get what I did for a living, but seeing me in Architectural Digest this month finally changed that. When I showed her the feature yesterday for Mother’s Day, she said in Cantonese, “Wah, my son so badass.” Haha! She was so proud.
The truth is, I’m only this badass because of her. As a single mom, who was a refugee, and came to the States by herself, her hustle gave me the grit to pursue my passion. I’m so thankful she gave me the space to find my own way. If you’re waiting for a sign to pursue a creative life, this is it. Stick with it. I’m so grateful I did.
Tucked into the side of the primary bedroom is this little nook. I’m still figuring out how to best use it. For now, it’s Verbena’s napping room. Also, we were calling these squished arches, but I learned they’re technically elliptical arches. I still prefer squished! You can buy kits for them, which makes the installation process so much smoother. Ascendance wall covering from @Backdrop .
Let’s talk about all the big and bold lighting I used from Hudson Valley Lighting Group because 12-foot ceilings deserve a major moment. Coming from 8-foot ceilings in LA, working with this height is such a treat and HVLG has incredible large-scale chandeliers to help fill up the scale of these spaces perfectly. Which one is your favorite?

The first thing people notice in our home is the lighting, so here’s a fun glow-up video of our New Orleans ground-up with Hudson Valley Lighting Group! Choosing lighting all at once is incredibly daunting. I’m grateful to HVLG for making the process a little easier. Their collections are packed with the kind of statement pieces that turn a room into a wow moment, which is exactly what I wanted for every single space. I also loved being able to incorporate my own designs from my @mymitzi collection into the mix. I’ll be sharing all the sources and spaces next! If you’re looking to level up your lighting game, they truly have it all. Use code DABITO20 to get 20% off Mitzi fixtures on mitzi.com!

We definitely went big in the primary bathroom. It’s a study in opulence and maximal restraint, leaning into the organic texture of Zellige mosaics grounded by a custom burlwood and marble vanity. I was tired of dim bathrooms, so I made sure this space was bright enough for my skincare rituals by adding sconces and a ginormous chandelier. We carried the tiles halfway up the walls for depth and installed custom medicine cabinets for more storage. Getting ready in here every morning feels so luxurious!

Who says parent life can’t look like a luxurious lounge? My sister’s family is growing, so I stepped in with @ashleyofficial to reclaim their living room from a sea of baby stuff. The star of the show is the modular Whitehaven sofa in Sable Velvet.
It’s deep, it’s comfy, and the best part is that it’s modular, so it can be rearranged in a flash whenever they throw a party. And let me tell you, they host a lot!
To keep things grounded, we added an understated, warm French oak cocktail table that’s perfect for gatherings or a night of mahjong. They love how grown-up it now feels. Proof that you can have a stylish, cozy space even with two little ones underfoot. #AshleyPartner #ad #AshleyLuxe
Our guest bath is a full-on embrace of maximalism. Striped tiles meet floral sisal wallpaper, tongue and groove wainscoting, and Italian Murano glass mirror. It’s a sensory overload in the best way possible. Seeing this pattern play brings me so much joy.
