Zaterdagavond ging de documentaire van Verborgen Verhalen op Go Short International Film Festival in premiere. Onze ode aan de pioniers die Nijmegen hebben gevormd tot de stad die het nu. En wat was het een prachtige avond.

Met steun van NachtPulse realiseerde hij Confessions of the Dancefloor: een project waarin de nachtclub verandert in een plek voor ontmoeting, identiteit en gemeenschap binnen de queer scene.
Met een opvallende neoninstallatie, geïnspireerd op het biechthokje, kunnen bezoekers anoniem hun verhalen delen en die van anderen lezen.

DANCING FRAGMENTS

Dancing Fragments vertrekt vanuit de queer house- en technoscene van Nijmegen. Het legendarische feest Extravaganza vormt het historische vertrekpunt. Niet als reconstructie van één nacht, maar als herinnering die blijft doorwerken in sfeer, geluid en gevoel.
Samen met Jeroen Roording, medeoprichter van Extravaganza, dook @daanwalder in een persoonlijk archief van foto’s, flyers en videobanden. Dit materiaal vormt de basis voor een zelfgebouwd, proceduraal generatief systeem. Beelden worden vertraagd, vervormd en deels aan het zicht onttrokken, vergelijkbaar met hoe herinneringen aan een nacht vervagen en verschuiven.
De installatie bestaat uit LED-matrixen, speakermodules en halftransparante panelen. Licht en geluid bewegen synchroon, maar fragmentarisch en soms onvoorspelbaar. Beelden verschijnen, overlappen en verdwijnen weer, zonder vast begin of einde.
Het werk onderzoekt hoe een ongrijpbare ervaring vorm kan krijgen. Queer nachtleven verschijnt hier als een tijdelijke ruimte van vrijheid, zelfacceptatie en collectiviteit. Niet vastgelegd in één beeld, maar aanwezig als een gevoel dat blijft resoneren.

MEET THE ARTISTS
– Daan Walder
Voor Verborgen Verhalen verdiepte @daanwalder zich in de queer house- en technoscene van Nijmegen. Centraal staat het verhaal van Extravaganza, een van de eerste housefeesten van de stad. Samen met Jeroen Roording, medeoprichter van Extravaganza, dook hij in hun oude archief vol foto’s, flyers en videobanden om herinneringen opnieuw te ervaren en verhalen op te halen.
Het werk dat Daan maakt is geïnspireerd door de emotionele en zintuiglijke ervaringen die deze feesten kenmerkten. Ontastbaar, maar direct herkenbaar voor iedereen die er ooit was. Van kroonluchters tot priklichten, van house tot techno, van xtc tot vriendschap.
In een audiovisuele installatie gebruikt hij LED-matrixen, speakermodules en lichtdoorlatende materialen om deze visuele en auditieve sensaties te vertalen naar een abstracte herinnering. In zijn maakproces speelt hij met dromen en het vervagen van herinneringen. Hoe vertaal je een ongrijpbaar gevoel naar vorm, licht en geluid?

Since I was young, I’ve been searching for spaces where I could truly be myself. Places that celebrate play, experimentation, and difference. Yet just when I thought I’d found them, many began to disappear, replaced by smooth, commercial surfaces that leave little room for friction or freedom.
STOORZENDERS grew from that feeling. It listens to the erased voices, memories, and stories of the city and sends them back into public space through compositions of light and sound.
By transforming the invisible infrastructures around us, radio waves, data, memory into a sensory experience, it asks: What if noise could be a form of care?
I’m excited to share that STOORZENDERS will be presented at the Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Show during Dutch Design Week, starting this Saturday. Come visit me and my installation to listen and tune in📡

STOORZENDERS was built to move. A portable installation that travels through the city, turning hidden corridors, abandoned buildings, and unexpected streets into stages where forgotten histories and collective memories resurface.
A key part of the project are the activations. Live moments when the antennas come alive through light and sound. Together with @tripeotechno , I’ve been exploring how raw synths and improvised soundscapes can merge with my live light compositions. These activations are where the energy really unfolds: part performance, part ritual, part interference in the city’s smooth flow.

Preparations for the final presentation of my grad project STOORZENDERS are happeninggg! Tuesday next week is the big moment. Fingers crossed xxx tbc
I’m excited to share that my project Solum Venenum will be on display at Microlab during this year’s Dutch Design Week, from Saturday Oct. 18th to Sunday Oct. 27th.
For this project, I looked into the largest illegal drug dump site ever discovered in the Netherlands. I turned my findings, scans and data into an interactive digital landscape that exposes the hidden environmental damage caused by illegal synthetic drug production.

This artwork that I've created is just a glimpse of the tremendous effort invested in bringing our vision to life. The intertwined white flowers emerging from the water symbolize the power of collaboration. Just as plants rely on each other to grow and flourish, we too need the support and unity of our community to achieve our goals . The moth resting on the stem of the flower symbolizes the transformative power of the night. It is during this time that our creativity thrives, and we undergo our own personal metamorphosis. Just like the moth emerges from its cocoon, we too experience growth and transformation through the darkness.
I'm grateful for all the opportunities that I’ve got to experience through this community, and I can't wait to see how our collective efforts continue to blossom💜🌸
