What began as a project about adoption lead me to speak as an international adoptee on a panel with @coram.uk , a children’s charity at the heart of adoption, fostering, and young people’s wellbeing.
The event was all about AI, intersectionality + the future of children’s social care, basically, can tech actually help kids who don’t always get heard, and if so, how?
This was kinda surreal!
Very inspired by my fellow panelists, whose insights and experiences added so much richness to the conversation.
My thoughts are every kid deserves to grow up knowing their mind is precious and their voice heard and if me sharing my creativity helps, I’m grateful for that!

I went into hiding after creating The Mother’s Wound for Deptford X.
It’s a deeply personal piece about adoption, identity, and loss.
Turns out vulnerability isn’t something I share easily… so naturally I thought the best way to tackle that was to plaster a room with murals about it (logic, right?).
It was overwhelming, but also kind of great!

Excited to be taking part in this visual arts Festival, a wee show that means a lot to my big ole heart.
It’s called “The Mother’s Wound”, and it feels like the start of a lifelong project.
Opening Day: Saturday, 12th July

I’ll be there from 11am to 6pm on the day.

I have been breaking through unconventional barriers from a young age.
Being made in Sri Lanka and designed in Northern Ireland it seems fitting that I would fall into a career of painting and decorating along with my recent success showcasing my Artistic Murals and Interior Talent on the Big Interiors Battle, 2023 on Channel 4.
I have been in the painting and decorating business for 5 years now taking on many projects, some great, some terrible.
Having worked with a few different companies I have stepped out on my own working under my own name CYD.DESIGN along with working with Poppy and her team @corkys_painters
The industry is fascinating when facing this role as a petite South Asian woman and have many a good story to tell.
I knew an office job was not for me as being active on a job is my freedom along with blasting the good ole beats as I paint!
My experience of being a female decorator has been extremely varied, interesting and rewarding from being on certain sites where men accept you as you are and those who really can’t stand the fact you’re there!
To be really honest I have had a good experience overall, when I open my mouth and the strong accent comes out the guys know I can hold my own and probably a little scared as i’ve an answer for just about everything 🤣
A funnier side to working in a very male dominated environment is being asked on dates, given my own clean bathroom that no men are allowed to use.
Used as bait to go and get ladders from other trades when our own team hasn’t had enough and a frustrating one is being called princess.
I ain’t no Princess hunny!!
Unfortunately in some cases there has been misogynist and racism however I didn’t see it worth my while entertaining that type of environment and removed myself.
To round off I’m a Bespoke Mural Artist, painter, decorator and all round creative that likes to stay busy.
Probably needs to rest more but life’s short! I jump with both feet into things and am very much enjoying it 🤪

I’ve watched Grand Designs most of my life, so it seemed pretty cool when the opportunity came up to paint inside the latest build based in Hackney Downs.
Seeing how a Grand Designs home comes together was extremely hectic but the result I thought was rather interesting as this particular build was once a garage.
