Despite the constant headwind for the last six days of cycling, we've been making slow but steady progress on the long, straight and sometimes boring gravel highways here in Namibia's south.
We've been determined to hitch a ride to skip some of these monotonously straight roads, but just as the headwinds never subsided, a lift never materialised. In fact, not a single eligible vehicle passed us for two days. But then, late yesterday afternoon, a man from Keetmanshoop offered to take us 50km up in the direction we were headed. Just what we needed. In a nerve-racking 20 minutes, we virtually teleported to the scene of this dam (swipe to third image) where we decided to rest for a day. Before he left, the man also offered us two ice cold beers that he took from a cooler box in his car. Then it made sense why we has driving so fast...
We generally go by the rule that, as for normal work-weeks, we need to take a 'weekend' every five days or so for our bodies to recover. A day or two off the saddle. But with the Fish River hike, the slow progress and the push to get to shops before our food runs out we've now gone two full weeks without rest. It was so good to just 'lam' around today and eat loads of lentils.
