This #teletuesday is a GREAT Nashville story, and I’m thrilled to be just a small part of it.
.
In the late ‘80s, maybe early ‘90s, some hot young picker moved to town with a strat & not much else. Renting a room in a house full of musicians, a roommate tried to point him in the right direction by asking “Why the HELL did you bring a STRAT to Nashville? This is a TELE town!”. That young musician went to the first pawn shop he found, and bought the first tele he saw: this wild 1983 MIA Standard Telecaster. He proceeded to play that Tele all around town, finally hanging up his strings and retiring some years ago.

Fast forward to today - and he pulls this old workhorse out of storage & decides to sell it for some gas money. Enter
@nickharleyband - eagle eye sharp on Marketplace, Nick scoops this old workhorse up for a song. The bridge was rusted in place, the saddles loooong gone. While the controls were too rusted out to be usable, the neck pickup is working (and working damn fine!) and there’s enough vinegar to clean up the bridge & control plate. Back up & singing, this one accompanied Nick this last Sunday
@the5spotnashville and sounded great!
.
Some interesting notes on the neck: at 1.711”, this is the widest
@fender neck I’ve seen. It’s also a very thin .798” at the 1st fret, and the 12th fret thickness of .841” is more like what I’d expect at the 1st! So this is a wide, slim taper neck - reminded me a little more of the Gibson ‘60s style taper! I also love the snakebite on the top, behind the bridge. That and the now-missing locking nut contraption from the headstock make me wonder what kind of wild, Broadway-Bender type stuff this old tele had up its sleeve at some point. Man, I love the visibly history these player guitars wear on them. Like…what’s up with the 5th fret? 😂😂😂
.
Thanks again
@nickharleyband - this was a pleasure. It’s always a joy to bring older guitars back to prime shape, especially when they sound this good!
.
Also,
@nickharleyband most recent album - “Painted Blue” - is streaming all around you. Give it a listen - it’s great!
