On the morning of the State of the Union address, the Portland Frog Brigade & local allies descended on Capitol Hill to visit lawmakers & deliver copies of the US constitution and the Declaration of Independence. the frogs went door to door, visiting everyone regardless of party affiliation, with some staffers being more receptive than others and a few even taking selfies with the frogs. everywhere they went, heads turned and the eye-catching parade left an impression with its theatric tactics

Each day, we are all witness to ever more heinous and heartbreaking patterns of state violence. The few in power have decided that the lives of the many (and particularly of those in marginalized groups) are an acceptable price to pay for their political dominance and short-sighted economic gains. From fueling climate chaos to killing community members and those who defend them, those in power are choosing to endanger all of us. We mourn these losses and recommit ourselves to fighting the exploitative and unjust system that perpetuates them.

June 13, 2025 - Veterans and supporters gathered for a press conference in front of the supreme court decrying the military parade and deployment of US troops to Los Angeles. Afterwards, they walked across the street to the capitol for an apparent photo-op that turned into an occupation of the capitol steps with banners and chanting. Approximately 70 veterans were arrested. 1 - banners read: "Benefits, not bullshit" and "money for people, not parades" 3 - Banner reads: Vets Say Military Off Our Streets 4 - The Keffiyeh was everywhere, worn by veterans and supporters alike 5 - Al (at left, in white) was one of the two people at the center of what is known as "The Columbia Eagle Incident" in which a mutiny occurred with the intent to prevent the delivery of napalm to US forces in Vietnam. Look it up, it's a crazy story 6 - US flag patches worn upside down were a common sight 9 - Capitol Police lining up arrestees 10 - Supporters chanted and sang from behind the barricades

COURAGE IN NON-VIOLENT ACTION A hush—raw and profound— enveloped my being as I stood with brave veterans from @vetsaboutface on Friday. Each veteran who spoke shared their journey of confronting deep moral pain and grappling throughout their enlisted service with their growing awareness of the injustice at the heart of the military system they served. As they shared, I realized that each one embodied the highest expression of courage— an extraordinary courage required to break with a rigidly enforced system of compliance to respond to a deeper moral and ethical calling— and then to bear the material, social, institutional, and other costs that come with that break. 🙌🔥 These veterans are asking all of us to wake up and listen to our moral and ethical centers. And, they are calling on enlisted service members— to refuse unlawful orders to stand firmly for democracy, and for our Constitutional freedoms. 
Every aspect of participating in this non-violent direct action with them — 💞feeling the nervous energy and quiet resolve in the preparation ❤️‍🩹hearing their experiences at the press conference ✊cheering them on moves to the steps of the US Capitol building 📣raising ours voice together— continues to resound in my mind, heart, body, soul, and spirit.
