Yesterday, About Face took over the rotunda of the Cannon Rotunda with nearly 150 veterans, military family members and others who stood up to Trump and this unjust war. While authorities arrested nearly 70 of our friends, we are standing strong and will continue to call for an end to the war on Iran, and for U.S. troops to return home. We can't afford another war. The cost is too damn high -- both the cost of lives, Iranian and American, and the rising cost of living as the U.S.'s assault on Iran chokes the global economy. Right now: Vets are demanding an end to the war on Iran at the Cannon Building in Washington, D.C. "I came here today from across the country to make sure today's generation doesn't have to suffer in the same way Iraq veterans did," said one About Face member Chris Sarson. "I can't just sit here and say nothing as more people are sent to die, and as more Iranians stand to lose their lives too." They gather with military family members and others to speak out in righteous indignation as the U.S. continues to drop catastrophic bombs on Iran. @vetsaboutface #nowaroniran

International Conscientious Objectors’ Day Muhammad Ali, the Heavyweight Boxing Champion, was widely known as an opponent of the Vietnam War. On April 28, 1967, Ali stood waiting, a military induction official called his name, “Mr. Ali, will you please step forward & be inducted into the United States Army.” He was then informed of the “gravity of the act” and was offered another chance. Ali never took that step. Ali is celebrated now but at the time the Vietnam war was popular and he was condemned as a coward & traitor. His heavyweight title was stripped, convicted of draft evasion and sentenced to 5 years in prison, banned from boxing for 3.5 yrs, and stripped of his passport. Sacrificing prime years of his career cost him millions, leaving him in debt. After his conviction was overturned, he returned to boxing well past his prime. Muhammad Ali’s stand helped jumpstart the anti-war movement. His moral clarity still inspires us all.

Satellite images show the damage to American bases across SWANA and reports of US troops being moved into hotels. According to international human law moving combatants to civilian infrastructure to keep them from being hit is illegal and qualifies as using human shields and changes the status of these buildings to legitimate targets endangering civilians. About Face Northwest will mobilize in coalition with veterans and community members to Spokane, Washington in solidarity with veteran Bajun Mavalwalla II and with Jac and Justice from the Spokane 3 from May 18-21st. This is political prosecution of protesters opposed to armed militias acting with impunity on their streets. As About Face Northwest is opposed to the militarization of our streets we will mobilize for Bajun during his trial. We will rally with the community, bear witness through court solidarity, and report back on this pivotal moment with major implications for the future of activism, freedom of speech, and democracy. FULL VID UP - What will this war cost us all? Our flag folding in Washington D.C., represented the lives already lost in the war on Iran on both sides, and the many more to come. Full video of the program, along with rousing speeches by vets and poignant testimonies from military family members, are now on our YouTube channel @vetsaboutface (& at bio link). We called for House Speaker Mike Johnson to take the folded flag and answer for what he's done. As this happened, Capitol Police arrested nearly 70 of us, including some of our disabled and elderly members, for simply speaking up and calling for an end to this illegal and unjust war. As veterans, we know from experience that this war, like the ones before it, will only make a handful of companies, billionaires, and politicians rich and devastate the people of Iran, the Middle East, and ultimately, working people here at home. Trump and Hegseth want to bomb Iran into submission, and send our husbands, wives and children to kill and die doing it. Veterans, military family members and allies are saying NO. Jessica Serrato, the fiancée of a currently deployed active-duty servicemember, was one of the 130+ who called upon Congress to bring troops home and end the Iran War on April 20. She stressed the terrible conditions U.S. troops are living in, and the fear and confusion around their mission. Active military members have been increasingly looking for options to become conscientious objectors or to otherwise leave the military, according to a recent NPR report. "Cost of living, costing lives, we say no more war crimes!" -- was the chant resonating through the rotunda of the Cannon Rotunda. When nearly 70 people from About Face, Military Families Speak Out, and other national organizations were arrested during the event, they continued the chant even as they were cuffed and led outside.
