Congratulations to Sean Pratt (PhD candidate in Community Health and Health Policy), who recently received the Dean’s Dissertation Award. Sean’s dissertation examines understudied dimensions of drug use among young adults ages 18–29, with a focus on the role of parents in shaping drug use and treatment trajectories over the course of young adulthood. Sean was also the first author on a poster presented at the Rx and Illicit Drug Summit in Nashville, Tennessee — work that grew out of a research partnership between CUNY SPH and the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and led by Dr. Diana Romero. Sean currently serves as an adjunct lecturer and teaching assistant at CUNY SPH and holds a Predoctoral Fellowship at NYU College of Nursing (@nyumeyers ). Congratulations, Sean! #CUNYSPH #StudentSpotlight #CHHP #DrugPolicy #PublicHealthResearch #HealthEquity

A new study from @nychealthy and #CUNYSPH finds that many Asian American adults in New York City face significant mental health challenges alongside barriers to care. Among more than 6,600 participants, 7.4% reported serious psychological distress, and more than one-third of those individuals had unmet mental health treatment needs. Cost, stigma, limited awareness of services, and a lack of culturally responsive care were among the key barriers identified. The findings underscore the need for more accessible, culturally and linguistically responsive mental health services across NYC communities. In an op-ed for @TheHill , #CUNYSPH Distinguished Scholar Lyndon Haviland warns that the rapid expansion of sports betting in the U.S. poses a growing public health threat. The piece argues that gambling is no longer a niche activity but a highly accessible, aggressively marketed industry with real risks for addiction, financial harm, and mental health consequences, especially for young people and other vulnerable populations. Haviland calls for a stronger public health–driven regulatory approach, emphasizing that sports betting should be treated like other addictive products, with safeguards that prioritize prevention, transparency, and consumer protection over industry expansion, starting with the SAFE Bet Act. How can wastewater help us stay ahead of public health threats? In our #GrandRounds, Tara Sabo-Attwood, PhD, explored how wastewater epidemiology is transforming surveillance, from tracking COVID-19 to detecting fentanyl trends in near real time. Unlike traditional data sources that can take months, wastewater analysis offers same-day insights into what’s happening in communities right now. By identifying early signals before cases or deaths rise this approach serves as a powerful early warning system, helping public health respond faster and more effectively. This World Immunization Week, we recognize one of public health’s greatest achievements: vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives over the past 50 years and protect against more than 30 life-threatening diseases. But millions of children still miss essential vaccinations each year. Building trust, sharing accurate information, and strengthening confidence in vaccines are critical to protecting our communities today and for generations to come. From measles to HPV to emerging vaccines for diseases like malaria and RSV, immunization continues to shape a healthier future for all. #CUNYSPH #WorldImmunizationWeek #VaccinesWork #PublicHealth
