Retirement doesn't mean stopping. Philâs new goal? He only needs two more race completions to qualify for the exclusive "100 Mile Club." He hasnât run the in-person race since 1979, but he's coming for that membership soon. See you at the starting line, Phil! đ #PhilsLastLap #OrIsIt?â

(Fun fact: The photo above is from the 2020 virtual runâthe very first time Phil was able to actually "run" the race since his elite days in the '70s!)
The Trio are back for one last episode of the season and this one is fun! With their finisher medals in hand, Jared, Sharon, and Los sit down to recap the entire race weekend while tasting some of D.C.âs delicious cherry blossom inspired treats!
Thank you all for listening all season long! We hope you all enjoyed this season as much as we love making it. We will see you all next season! #cucb2026
Phil often insists that the raceâs success belongs to a community far larger than himself. But to this committee, he has always been the anchor. He credits the "incredible work" of our volunteer organizing committee for building the raceâs gold-standard reputation. Under his leadership, every volunteer becomes part of a "fabulous supporting cast" that feels more like family. đ¤ #PhilsLastLap
They say he literally wrote the book on race directingâbecause he did. â
â
Phil co-founded Running Times (@runningtimes ) magazine in 1977 and later founded Road Race Management to mentor race directors everywhere. His influence stretches far beyond D.C. â
â
Heâs a mentor, a publisher and the ultimate âstewardâ of the sport. â

Philâs legacy isnât just in milesâitâs in miracles. đ¸ â
â
Phil has always been a bridge-builder, and perhaps his most impactful bridge was bringing a group of approximately 40 credit unions on as title sponsors in 2002. This collaboration allowed the Credit Union Miracle Day organization to utilize the race as a vehicle for good, raising a staggering $12 million for @ChildrensMiracleNetwork over the last 24 years. Phil is the first to credit the credit unions for this incredible work, but his leadership is what made the partnership possible. â¤ď¸ â

When Phil became the solo event director in 1991, the race had 3,327 finishers. Over the #CUCB2026 race weekend, we welcomed over 28,000 participants across the 10 Mile and 5K. For 35 years as race director, Phil Stewart has been the âstewardâ of a tradition that has grown into a national treasure. #PhilsLastLap #LegacyInMotion
From elite competitor to race director, Phil Stewart has seen every inch of this course from both sides of the bib. đ¸ #PhilsLastLapâ

Before he ran the race, Phil *really* ran the race. He finished in the top 10 twice, taking 5th in 1975 with a time of 52:55 and 6th in 1977 with a time of 51:01. Phil was a top area runner who even competed in the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials.
38 years of leadership. 35 years at the helm. Thousands of miles. One legendary finish line. đ¸â

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom has seen incredible growth since 1988, and at the center of it all has been our Event Director Phil Stewart. As he prepares to transition to his new role as event director emeritus, we are dedicating this week to the man who has been the âstewardâ of the Runnerâs Rite of Spring.â
â
From his days as a top-10 elite runner in the 70s to leading a mission that has raised over $12 million for children, weâre sharing the stories, the numbers and the moments that defined an era.â

Watch this space all week as we celebrate #PhilsLastLap. You won't want to miss the memories we have in store.â
