On February 8th, I had the chance to exhibit my photo quilt Inherited Absence at Ankali as part of the Becoming Home exhibition with @initiative.hayde .
The exhibition reflected on the idea that home is not simply somewhere we return to, but something we slowly grow into through memory, displacement, and time.
This project comes from trying to understand my father’s story of leaving Czechoslovakia in 1983 and my own return to the Czech Republic years later.
I grew up the child of two immigrants from very different backgrounds. A lot of importance was placed on assimilating so I could succeed in the American dream, and much of my own cultural background was never clearly passed down to me. I came to the Czech Republic partly out of a need to reconnect with that side of my identity, having never felt fully American, Czech, or Argentinian.
Inherited Absence pieces together parts of this story through family photographs, my father’s drawings, and the letters my grandmother and father exchanged as their last form of communication. What remains are fragments. Through photo quilting I work with these materials alongside my own, reconstructing memories that are not fully mine while trying to build a sense of home in my father’s homeland, even if some pieces never quite fit together.
Thank you to @meminakyar and @kyagizem for curating the exhibition and giving me the opportunity to share my family’s story.
