We Back Babyyy! On Monday 8/7 at 9pm we're doing a show at Rockwood Music Hall! Link in bio for RSVP and details!
Prepping and rehearsing for this show has been so motivating and focusing for me. It feels like coming back to breath, coming back to center, coming back to true self.
Looking back on these clips from past shows and seeing my friends and knowing each person in the crowd had me pretty emotional today. It's been a long time that I've been hidden away in the cave learning about mixing and mastering and tinkering at away at the songs on the impending EP. Spending too much time in the cavern starts to warp the mind, distorting one's sense of reality and self. But getting out to do open mics again and sharing the clips with you all and remembering what art really means to me has helped bring me back to the surface world.
Art and music and poetry and words are about connection. Listening and being heard. Sharing and witnessing. Getting sucked into a story until you're crying and then shaking your booty two minutes later.
My songs are chaos and introspection in dynamic helpings and there's still a lot i'm learning about how to balance that both sonically and emotionally. But knowing that next week, we'll all get together to jump and shout and boogie has brought an energy and determination and groundedness that I forgot about while I was in that cave.
I can't wait to let loose with you all very soon. And I promise, I'm making the Pancakes EP in the morning. š„
(P.S. This audio is from an interlude I'm working on called Nooch, featuring some loving thoughts from the inimitable Mike Tizzano.) And it fills my heart with warmth every time I hear it.)
Thanks to @openbook.nyc for a fun night! Loved seeing the other readers and the amazing breadth of styles. This piece is an acapella or a new song Before Breakfast. Iāll be doing this song with the beat and more at my show at Rockwood on Monday Aug 7th at 9pm! Link in my bio for more details.
WE BACK BABYYY! After too long, Iām doing a show at Rockwood and rapping bout pancakes again! Gonna be all the songs on the imminent Pancakes EP and some new tunes too! Link in bio to rsvp and with more details. Bring your friends! Dance your pants off!
Feeling really inspired by Fall lately. I sat down this week and made a skeleton beat and wrote some lyrics to a song Iāve been imagining for years now. Will share a draft when itās ready. And have been finally feeling like the current EP has turned a corner and is almost finished. After a busy October of traveling and friends and weddings, it was really relieving that my anxious self returned to the songs with new ears and finally heard them as songs again instead of a collection of sounds to compress and EQ and squeeze and perfect.
For a while now, as I trudged through the sludge of the technical minutia of mixing, Iāve been really trying to re-examine my whole songwriting ambition. It started as a redemption arc, an adventure to return from the forest with a healing elixir before the blight engulfed my countryside. The goal was to achieve enough that i could create the space to make art a joy in itself again through that redemption. but paradoxically the idea that I was in need of redemption weighed down the whole process and is what created the feeling of stuckness and rot as I hid away in that cavern too long. Writing this down now after a beautiful run in the park to remind myself of the vigor and freedom of the reasons I started making short films in hs and wrote poetry in college: curiosity and exploration. The joy of making strange shapes in Microsoft paint into a moving animal, the fun of finding new ways to rhyme in rhythm, the exhilaration of shouting those rhymes to friends, rapping like surfing a wave and staying balanced while doing backflips on the board.
Trying to get back to feeling like art is the goal in itself. Back to Just the fact that I am spending a minute creating feel like the Sun warm on my face and a moment to breathe. Back to The process like running through the trails of the park, sweating through my shirt, panting and smiling like a puppy off their leash.
Happy Anniversary to this Cutie @kellyruthk ā¤ļøš special shout-out to the incredible cutie pie she baked, the fact that we both got each other scrapbooks with the same style template without knowing, and especially to a year of happiness and love :)

Last week @_elisawinter_ through a Holidaze show at @11thstbar ! It was one of the most festive events I've been to in years. She even invited me to do a few guests spots including a brand new verse in the middle of her cover of the classic "Happy Holidays". What's your favorite line in the verse?

This year for the Festival of Lights and Sounds 2021, we had the artists vote on which organization we should raise money for. It was a close race, but we decided on The Sunrise Movement.ā
ā
The Sunrise Movement is a movement of young people around the US that use grassroots activism to bring forward climate justice solutions into the mainstream and into reality. One of their most successful actions was a sit-in in Nancy Pelosi's office in 2018 that brought national attention to The Green New Deal and brought that idea and plan into the mainstream. By donating to them, we are supporting the organizing structure that allows them to have a presence throughout the US so that they can take action in key areas and affect change on hyperlocal and national levels. We need to protect our communities by taking action on climate change and we need to support the people who are doing that direct work. Please join us in supporting the Sunrise Movement by donating today.ā

Also! If you have any pictures or videos from the Festival, please click the link in the bio and upload them to our dropbox so we can share them with the artists and with everyone else. Thanks!ā
