Only 2 sleeps until the CTCH/DES Student Showcase, and our senior students in 499 have been working hard on their capstone projects! Don’t miss the chance to experience these incredible projects! Join us at the showcase on April 9 between 4 and 7 pm in the Shumiatcher Theatre and RC 025.1 in the Riddell Centre to celebrate our students and their interdisciplinary work! Here’s a preview of 6 of the 12 capstone projects. When We Bloom by Anna Chu is a gesture-based interactive installation that explores how physical-digital systems can evoke openness, growth, and vulnerability through one’s presence. Participants trigger synthetic flowers to unfold as they approach the mural and become part of the piece. Too Many Shells by Peter Siapno is an animated 3D short film that metaphorically depicts the experience of becoming an interdisciplinary artist through the story of an indecisive hermit crab. The Distance Between Us by Jhoanna Katigbak is a nine-panel comic strip and AR experience that addresses the intensified guilt felt by immigrant providers forced to prioritize work over attending final rituals back home. The artist employs creative technologies to support families navigating the often-overlooked trauma of grieving from afar. Please Hold by Carmen Jerry is a narrative-driven web-based scrapbook that immortalises the artist’s community. The artist’s poetic narration and how they conceptualise time in this work draws inspiration from Jeanette Winterson’s Weight. Urban Echoes by Jesse Livingstone is a video game that challenges common perceptions of skateboarding and skateboarding culture through engaging gameplay and personal storytelling. It is designed to be easily accessible to non-gamers and non-skateboarders alike. OUT by Samantha Liamzon is a three-walled projection installation with an integrated augmented reality (AR) experience about the artist’s journey as a queer Filipina woman. The word “out” refers to “coming out” as queer and being outside of the norm. Photos by Jhoanna Katigbak

With just over a week until the CTCH/DES Student Showcase, our senior students in 499 have been working hard on their capstone projects! You don’t want to miss the chance to experience these impressive projects! Join us at the showcase on April 9 between 4 and 7 pm in the Shumiatcher Theatre in Riddell Centre to celebrate our students and their innovative interdisciplinary work! Here’s a preview of 6 of the 12 capstone projects. 1-3 Bricks & Buttons by Samuel Willis is an arcade-style game console that reclaims play as a meaningful and creative process rather than a trivial pastime. The console consists of a 3D-printed shell with Lego-compatible studs. 4-6 Still Splashing by Sara Degenstein is a whimsical 3D-animated short film that follows a duckling named Dottie who pushes back against her parents’ belief that play is childish. To promote Still Splashing, Sara also designed a logo and campaign involving rubber ducks and QR codes, encouraging discovery and interaction through a playful, unexpected format. 7-9 Beyond Me and You by Alexa Moldovan is a retro-futuristic 3D animation, with an integrated Twine chatbot, an Arduino installation, and a flyer, that sheds light on the emotional, environmental, and societal harm of AI chatbots. 10-11 Questless by Isabel García is an app that helps neurodiverse gamers finish and play more sandbox games without feeling overwhelmed or getting distracted. 12-13 Shatter Me by Olivia Thyone Grace Heartcross Absence is primarily a t4t (trans-for-trans) traditional role-playing game that touches upon themes of plurality, transition, community, and how one is raised. 📸 Photos by Jhoanna Katigbak

Congratulations to Creative Technologies & Design Department Head and Professor Dr. Charity Marsh on being awarded an $866,798 grant from Canada Foundation for Innovation to build GENerate Collaboratory at the University of Regina! The Collaboratory will house a recording studio, an experimental sound design and making studio, and a critical listening and immersion lab. From SaskToday: “A new interdisciplinary hub for sound research and creation will help break down barriers in the music and video game industry. Led by Dr. Charity Marsh, head of the creative technologies and design department, the University of Regina will construct the GENerate Collaboratory. “The GENerate Collaboratory will be a place of experimentation, curiosity, play and a place where mistakes are valued,” said Marsh. Students will have access to equipment, including recording studios, microphones, immersive labs and projectors for research, innovation and expanding possibilities. One key objective of the hub is to amplify the voices of those who continue to be marginalized and underrepresented.” Visit SaskToday[dot]ca to read the rest of the story.

Good morning, Regina! My name is Morgan Green, and I’m thrilled to have joined UofR this academic year as an Assistant Professor of Creative Technologies and Design. It’s been a pleasure working with students here in recent months, and I look forward to getting to know more of you. I love creative coding, and I try to introduce students to computer science as a zone of play, silliness, and even transgression. For my research, I build art machines that exist in the blurry spaces between what can and cannot be encoded. I hope to see you in my class sometime! #creativetechnology #creativecoding
