I spent the last year field recording and listening to the Duwamish River with Timothy White Eagle .
A river once wild and winding now constrained and straightened out in favor of industry.
In some places the river still sounds wild, with sounds of ducks, frogs and birds. However, even in the most remote areas my field recorder picked up the sound of electricity from power lines overhead.
In more populated areas the soundscape is accented by cars and trains whooshing by, industrial machinery, boats. The sound of the water subdued.
At the dam the sound shook my heart. Water thrashing against containment searching for flow. Sometimes so transformed it sounded more like FM synthesis than water.
Only when using underwater mics could the sounds of humanity be filtered out.
All of this listening culminated in a weaving of river sound with insights from indigenous story tellers. Sharing the historical significance of this river and visions for the future.
