She isn’t waiting for anything in particular—only for the next hour to arrive and relieve her of the last one. She moves around the house. She’s bored. She drinks black coffee after black coffee. The city moves beneath her window, and she watches it the way some people watch aquariums.
Below, a woman turns the corner. Something about her catches the eye: a sharp eyebrow, a flick of the coat. The languid woman on the sofa shifts, raising her head. The outside woman feels like a sudden intrusion—a plot twist in a day with no plot.
We zoom to the other woman as she enters the building. Inside, the lobby breathes cool, dim light—marble floor, potted plants. The elevator arrives. The languid woman steps out, and the woman from the street steps in, a subtle shift of gravity as they cross paths.
Something has happened, even if it’s just enough to wonder whether it was real.

I went to Kuwait in February to photograph artist (and friend) @alia_farid for @art21 . I spent several days driving around with Alia and @noortamari chatting about everything and discovering this richly historical part of the world. It seems so surreal that, only days later, this whole region is once again at the mercy of the whims of powerful and narcissistic men. Thank you @alia_farid for so generously opening up your world to us
