This moment has been 12 years in the making. Cook by Feel was never about being told what to do with your body. It was never about rules, or regimens, or getting it right. Teas, Tinctures & Tonics is an intimate workshop experience rooted in plant education, sensory awareness, & the kind of nourishment that doesn’t require perfection, just presence. We will taste. There was something especially tender about this moment. Watching Ricky’s mother stand in front of her own portrait, looking at herself through the eyes of her son, felt like the exhibition quietly folding back onto itself. 💛Love witnessing love. A mother seeing how she has been seen, held, remembered. Over the past few months, Ricky Day’s (@rickydaystudio ) exhibition, “I do think it’s not asking too much for you to love…,” invited so many of us into conversations about care, intimacy, memory, family, softness, grief, and the complicated ways we try to love one another well. Our final Coffee & Conversation on love and motherhood felt like the right closing note. People shared stories about mothers, chosen family, being cared for, being misunderstood, learning softness, and trying to pass love down differently than they received it. We are deeply grateful to Ricky, his mother, (aka Mama Vivian-to me😜) and everyone who showed up, listened, shared, and allowed themselves to be moved. I hope the experience of witnessing and being in community in this way stays with you. I have the great privilege of being in community with so many people who have lovingly adopted me as their daughter. And, as the daughter of a woman who embodies so much of what I now try to share with my own children and with anyone willing to listen, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude today. the warm-up an intentional evening for DC Black pride • Before the weekend begins — we ground and connect. Because active rest and grounding are something we need more of — especially us. In my graduate research on intersectional populations, I found that yoga therapy is one of the most effective tools for stress mitigation in Queer Black communities. This event was built from that work. A space designed to pour into our community physically, energetically, mentally, and socially — so we move through DC Black Pride weekend with compassion, clarity, discernment, and pleasure.
