DAKOTA WAYNE is a commissioned artist for the Generations gallery.
DAKOTA WAYNE started making beats when he turned 13 and three years later got serious about recording himself while attending a trade school in Arizona that had a recording studio. Years of writing, rapping, producing, mixing and recording went by while DAKOTA worked as a barista and wedding DJ, but after a musical group he started in Arizona broke up, he needed a change, and a big one. Moving to New York City was that big one. Since then, DAKOTA WAYNE has made some of his most honest and faith-forward music yet. Influenced by an eclectic mix of artists new and old, from Frank Ocean to Waylon Jennings, DAKOTA’s never been bound by genre, but aspires to make music that 14 year old DAKOTA, 26 year old DAKOTA, and a 70 year old DAKOTA would obsess over. From deeply honest raps to radio ready choruses, experimental production to piano ballads, DAKOTA WAYNE will continue to be himself, as loudly, and vulnerably, as possible.
When DAKOTA WAYNE isn’t making music, he is mentoring the next generation and paying his bills as a caregiver. DAKOTA knew when he received this commission that he wanted to work with some of the recently graduated students he knew and led, Sincere, Josue, and Jordan. These young men have expressed an interest and passion in music that led to two of the songs on this record, “ANYDAY” and “SHININ’ DOWN”. Other songs, like “GOD WRITES THE BEST STORIES” and “DAY AFTER DAY (PSALM 96)”, were started before this project officially began, but grew to completion thanks to the theme of “GENERATIONS”. “FAMILY PHOTO” and
“GENERATE’” were then created from a more contemplative direction, reflecting on family, responsibilities, and inheritance.
GENERATIONS is on display today until 6pm at 417 W 57th st, as a gift to New York City - featuring DAKOTA’s work as well as nine other’s work that lifts eyes to the Creator of heaven and earth.
