Nia MacKenzie Scovel is a multifaceted artist born in Santa Fé, New Mexico, raised in the heart of San Francisco, living in Los Angeles. Attending Westlake School for the Performing Arts from age 4-18, She was heavily trained in classical ballet the majority of her life alongside other dance styles, including contemporary, modern, jazz, hip hop, hula, and tahitian.
Having a diverse training background set her up for curiosity, wonder, and eagerness to learn. By the age of 17, she started treating her ballet practice as a key factor for her training and conditioning, and no longer a career goal.
Once graduating high school, she geared up to start her journey at California Institute of the Arts, where she began to strongly focus on immersing herself in contemporary practices while tending to her hip hop training she gained back home.
While ballet remained prominent in her training, she started to hold space for her individualized style and practice. Beginning to find her voice in her second year at CalArts while gearing up for her first solo showing of what she wants to start sharing as an artist. Not only until her CalArts did she start to come into her own and embrace what was hers, while also starting to question the sense of individuality, and performance within day to day life to fit a certain mold. In her eyes, she grew up wondering how she could explain where she is from, this still remains the question and it has turned into the most beautiful exploration and struggle in her work. During 2020, Nia went through a career altering injury, where in a time where movement was not possible, she began to think, wonder, write, and question. When finally beginning to dance again, she brought in her spirit she feels is with her constantly, and in this practice she will be sharing a dance that to the naked eye, she is alone. She is not.
