For decades, parts of lower Cataract Canyon were drowned beneath the backwaters of Lake Powell.
Now, as the reservoir has dropped, the river is revealing itself again. Gypsum Rapid has recently reemerged, joining Imperial and Waterhole Rapids as powerful reminders that the canyon is changing in real time.
Old channels are coming back to life, sediment is moving again, and the Colorado River is reclaiming stretches that had been underwater for years. Itâs rare to witness geology and river history unfolding this dramatically within a single generation.
