Cornwall Pride CEO Matthew Kenworthy Gomes and one of our Lead Volunteers Nathaniel had the honour of attending the Royal Garden Party and meeting Prince William, after being chosen by Cornwall Pride’s Trustees to represent the organisation following Cornwall Pride receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary organisation can receive in the UK, often described as the MBE for volunteer groups.
This moment was never just about two people standing in a garden. It was about Cornwall.
It was about every volunteer who has carried barriers at 8am in the rain. Every marshal who has walked beside our parades. Every young person who came to Pride scared and left feeling seen. Every parent, ally, performer, stallholder, trustee, partner, sponsor, and community member who has helped build something bigger than an event.
What we need to think about is what this actually says about Cornwall too. A rural county, often overlooked nationally, has built one of the most connected and community-led Pride movements in the UK. Multiple town Prides. The Pride Bus. Safer Spaces. Inclusion training. Mental wellbeing support. Community partnerships across health, public services, business, and grassroots organisations. Not because it was easy, because it mattered.
Meeting Prince William was an incredible honour, but honestly, the most powerful part was being able to talk about Cornwall Pride’s volunteers, our communities, and the people behind this work every single day.
And somehow, in true Cornwall Pride fashion, there was still laughter, chaos, probably too much excitement, and a few moments of “how on earth did we get here?”
But maybe that is the point.
When communities come together properly, when people choose visibility over fear, connection over isolation, and inclusion over silence, things change.
For One and All really means something here in Cornwall.
Thank you Cornwall. This moment belongs to you.

Today is for lesbian visibility, lesbian joy, and lesbian community.
For every lesbian who’s felt overlooked, underestimated, or written out, this is a reminder that you belong, you matter, and you make this community what it is.
