When the @bentleymotors R-Type Continental arrived in 1953, it was so fay beyond it may well have been a spaceship.
It was the world’s fastest four-seat motor car, influenced by post-war engineering principles and aviation as much as it was styled.
Former Bentley design director Stefan Sielaff remains in awe of its flowing surfaces and minimal decoration. ‘Only by hand-crafting the body panels in aluminium could you possibly have achieved this sort of effect,’ he noted. ‘It’s a piece of art, a sculpture.’
