Here/Now begins in Algeria.
The first instalment of Dazed MENA’s new series exploring creative scenes across the region traces a generation of Algerians negotiating questions of identity, inheritance and self-definition through image, sound, design, movement and community.

Act 3: A Virtue Before Conviction
The last of the the rest of it, this was the last and 3rd day spent shooting birds & rowers on the nile.
Endurance is a virtue before conviction, a proof faith under pressure.
the rest of it started as this idea in my mind to show all that was emotionally experienced during the past 2 years, it felt like a self-retribution after being creatively blocked for the longest time.
it was necessary to break unreasonable mirrors i’d see my reflections in, a resistance against perfection to just create freely instead of burdening the weight of potential/what ifs/ and fictional possibilities eroding my mind, or in Julia Cameron’s words “Worrying about the quantity and letting God worry about the quality.”
This was a release and I cant be more relieved and excited for all that is to come!

We invited our friends and family over at our home venue to celebrate it one last time together as a crew.
The Nile garden has been our playground for so long its heartbreaking to say goodbye, and we decided to eternalize it by documenting the day, and it came together as a beautiful palette sonically and visually.
See you on NYE at our Nile garden, for one last time!
Lazuli Homecoming sets coming soon 😉

Act 2’s flipside, was this incident.
The 8 was struggling to execute a synchronized row as some of the crew are failing to do the movement. Communicated as the letter “و” (WAW) in arabic as the motion of the hand and the oar(s) is done by imagining you’re writing the letter. Frustration does arise alot during the training sessions, again highlighting the struggle to be as surgical and efficient as possible, as one out of sync crew member can mess with the balance of the entire boat!
Act 3 will bookend this project, coming very soon!
Capacity of Endurance (قوة تحمل) is the last of the rest of it
Act 2 is The Eight

This project is a visual exploration of the nile rowers, their relationship to the nile, their commitment and competition, and their capacity of endurance for the sport. The 8+ is the biggest and the fastest boat in the sport, it consist of 8 sweep rowers along with the coxwain that directs them. The more I got into the sport, the more I realized how strategic and surgical being a rower is.
A Cloudy Day is Act 3, and it is finally the last of the rest of it…
The other side of the coin to the pristine visuals for Capacity of Endurance is this, the players themselves, the coach, and how they all act as a tribe and a team.
Shot during the first day I meet everyone, they were training for a 2000m erg test…
Capacity of Endurance (قوة تحمل) is the last of the rest of it
Act 1 is Testing the water..

Step behind the scenes of our September issue cover shoot with Wegz, filmed ahead of the release of his album Aqareb. This release not only marks the biggest moment in his career, but a turning point in how rap continues to push the boundaries of pop music in Egypt, the region, and beyond.

The rest of it for Rafik’s The Longest Sleep is Moulid Jalal El-Din Al-Soyouti in Cairo, 2024.
My brief experiences in shooting Al Mawalid made me oberve some similarities for the goers. All the sequences are bundled thematically to reflect that where appropriate.
1- the observers
2- the seekers
3- portraits
4- the pacers
5- a mohsen sallam zikr
6- MISC
Special thanks for @ddinaali for the support and the audio, which is recorded by her during Mohsen Sallam’s zikr during Mawlid Al-Morsi Abo El-Abbas in Alexandria last year 🌹
Was lucky enough to go through this experience for The Longest Sleep, Rafik’s observation on the moment of transcendence during Zikr in Al Moulid.
