Meet Marcus Mason-Williams and “Dolly,” a horse he says sparks his creativity and brings him a deep sense of calm.
Marcus is an autistic artist, author, illustrator, and animator. In honor of #InternationalDayofPersonswithDisabilities, Horses for Mental Health is grateful to share this video he recorded for us. Marcus’s story shines a light on how horses create space for self expression, confidence, and emotional grounding for people with diverse needs.
The video features his connection with horses and the equine inspired artwork Marcus draws and commissions through @cool.art2021 . Cheers to your incredible art!
Marcus is also our third Special Olympics athlete to help uplift this mission and raise awareness around how horses support people in ways that feel safe and empowering.

In honor of May's global Horses for Mental Health Campaign, giving healing to humans and purpose to horses....
I'm delighted to exclusively premiere to HMH, artwork I've drawn of my horse friend "Dolly," a dazzling horse I introduced to Horses for Mental Health followers last fall.
Special thanks to my friend and "Dolly's" owner Kirsty Froggatt for her horse wisdom and all the incredible moments of quiet and calm with "Dolly" that inspire my artistic creativity!
For anyone curious about equine assisted programs and how time spent with horses can have positive impact on mental health, I encourage you to learn more.
What a lot of people don't realize is that horses are being incorporated into real, professional mental health care by licensed practitioners.
This May HMH is bringing 130 program partners together, from all across the United States and in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Ireland, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe during Mental Health Awareness Month.

CoolArt2021 with Boncom team at the NAC. Lovely to see old friends Natalie, Lindsey and Carina from Boncom. It was through them and my visit with Special Olympics last year that I got to know this wonderful place. Enjoyed showing them my artwork, sharing my knowledge of horses and most of all taking them to see the horses!

Special Olympics helps open up the world for people with intellectual difficulties like me. After last year's wonderful Athlete Design Co Lab event in Utah I returned in April for 2 weeks to Utah, to volunteer with the amazing National Ability Center and experience again the wonderful wild horses of the Onaqui herd thanks to Jan Drake and the Bureau of Land Management.
